U.N. urged to take action on asteroid threat
Sun Feb 18, 2007 12:46pm ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - An asteroid may come uncomfortably close to Earth in 2036 and the United Nations should assume responsibility for a space mission to deflect it, a group of astronauts, engineers and scientists said on Saturday.

Astronomers are monitoring an asteroid named Apophis, which has a 1 in 45,000 chance of striking Earth on April 13, 2036.

Although the odds of an impact by this particular asteroid are low, a recent congressional mandate for NASA to upgrade its tracking of near-Earth asteroids is expected to uncover hundreds, if not thousands of threatening space rocks in the near future, former astronaut Rusty Schweickart said.

"It's not just Apophis we're looking at. Every country is at risk. We need a set of general principles to deal with this issue," Schweickart, a member of the Apollo 9 crew that orbited the earth in March 1969, told an American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in San Francisco.

Schweickart plans to present an update next week to the U.N. Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space on plans to develop a blueprint for a global response to an asteroid threat.

The Association of Space Explorers, a group of former astronauts and cosmonauts, intends to host a series of high-level workshops this year to flesh out the plan and will make a formal proposal to the U.N. in 2009, he said.

Schweickart wants to see the United Nations adopt procedures for assessing asteroid threats and deciding if and when to take action. Continued...

With the UN in charge, at least that asteroid will be assured of a great parking spot in NYC.

People will be too busy killing each other to care about the asteroid.

Wow the un can make a bundle off the corperate kickbacks from this. Pour a ton of money into the un which will have meetings and talk about it while America does all the work.

Can you see it now. The security council meets to talk about deflecting the asteroid. They creat a resolution to take action against the asteroid. China, and Russia veto the action because they don't like the wording in the resolution. But they do pass a resolution condemning Israel.

By the time the U.N. agrees to the shape and color of the table at which the committe will review the resolution supporting the creation of a resolution creating an exploratory committee to investigate the potential of examining a possible solution to the asteroid, the U.S. will have nuked it, causing the U.N. to request the requisition forms to acquire the paper required to write a nasty note condemning any nation that does not condemn the actions of the United States for not filing the paperwork for the acquisition of a request form for an unofficial meeting to discuss the possibility of asking the U.N. for a summit to investigate possible permissions or justifications for seeking a committe designated to determine if there were any possible solutions, or they'll spout some bullcrap about global warming and go back to not paying their parking tickets.

And condemn the US for acting unilaterally.

Hell, man - just plant the rumor that the asteroid is going to target pre-pubescent girls in lawless villages; U.N. peacekeeping forces will go after that sucker with everything they've got!

I heard about this. It's sad that Faux News is so far removed from being in a league with the real news networks that it has to resort to competing with the Comedy Central Daily Show. :gives:
