I've seen a lot of movies in the last forty or so years, some good, some not so good. But they all have on thing in common, they all have a theme song of some kind or another.

Of all the movies I have seen, the best theme song so far is, without a doubt Isaac Hayes' Shaft. It won an Oscar, how could ot not be great? Furthermore, I never tire of hearing it.

So...what's your favorite movie theme song?

Oh...and if you watch the video, check out the afro on Jesse Jackson...1973...1hat a year!

I always loved the theme from Midnight Cowboy- "Everybody's Talkin'". It really gave the movie an overwhelming and appropriate feeling of melancholy.

(And it won a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, for Harry Nilsson).

I also particualrly loved the moody theme music in Platoon. It is Barber's Adagio for Strings. It was not obviously written for the movie, or I would have chosen it as first.

Great thread topic, btw!

Dang, two very good choices.

Ennio Morricone did some great music. Manu, check out this video: Ukulele Orchestra of GB - The Good the Bad the Ugly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3gp7B8WC4Q). It's very entertaining and surpprising.

Abbe, Nilsson Schmillson is one of my favorite albums. And you're right Everybody's Talkin' set exactly the right tone for that movie.

Does it have to be an actual theme, as in "Theme from Rocky"? Because that's my pick in that case. If it doesn't necessarily need to be a theme song, but a song that fits the movie perfectly, I'd say "Just Like Honey" by The Jesus and Mary Chain from Lost in Translation.:D

I actually like the scene in the drug store (food store? it's been a while) set to Patti Smith's "Rock and Roll Nigger" better than that one.

What a weird movie that is, though, huh? I still don't think I understand it at all, but it's ambitious, I guess.

Can this thread just be about great musical scenes from movies? Here's two outstanding ones from Kill Bill Vol. 1:

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XKLeCjySMi8&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XKLeCjySMi8&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

This next one is good, but it might be a little NSFW, what with the violence and all.

This scene is outstanding from beginning to end, but my favorite music moment starts at 3:39....
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EqWhpD1cXS8&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EqWhpD1cXS8&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
...also, if I may be such a dork, the shot at 4:03 (where she's running up the stairs) might be my favorite shot in the entire movie. Outstanding.

I started the thread and I say you can make it about whatever you want. I am a firm believer that all threads evolve, topics change, hijacking is natural during the course of conversation.

Hell yeah!

Gary Jules' "Mad World" from Donnie Darko.... Spoiler warning, even though this won't make sense if you haven't seen the movie (doesn't make a lot of sense even if you have!)

The Doors "The End" from Apocalypse Now. Very fitting because this song runs at the close of the move, the end. Plus I think this is a great song.

Same movie, Apocalypse Now - Ride of the Valkyre" This is the scene where the helocopter attack is. The same one where "Charlie don't surf" one of my favority movie lines came from.
