Japan suspects Chinese dumplings deliberately poisoned: minister

Japan's health minister Tuesday said China-made dumplings may have been deliberately poisoned with pesticide as the number of Japanese reporting illness reaches the thousands.

Pesticide was detected on the package wrapping and the frozen meat dumplings, triggering a nationwide scare that led major foodmakers to recall all food made at the factory near Beijing.

"Taking into account the circumstantial evidence we have so far, we cannot help suspecting crime," Health Minister Yoichi Masuzoe told reporters.

A total of 3,742 people have said they became sick after eating the dumplings or other frozen food, the health ministry said in its latest figures, although it noted only 10 were diagnosed with pesticide poisoning.

Masuzoe did not say where the alleged crime would have occurred, but the daily Yomiuri Shimbun quoted an unnamed Japanese police official suspecting the contamination took place in China.

The top government spokesman downplayed the remarks by the outspoken minister.

"Some people make bold speculation but we should n.Secretary Nobutaka Machimura said.

China -- Japan's largest trading partner and second biggest supplier of imported food -- has denied Tokyo's allegations that the dumplings themselves contained pesticides but pledged cooperation in the investigation.

The global reputation of China's vital manufacturing industry was seriously damaged last year by a string of overseas safety scandals and product recalls involving the country's export goods.
