The Difference Between Heaven and Hell
February 10, 2008

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said,

‘Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.’

The Lord led the holy man to two doors.

He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man’s mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful. But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.

The Lord said, ‘You have seen Hell.’

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man’s mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking.

The holy man said, ‘I don’t understand.’

‘It is simple,’ said the Lord. ‘It requires but one skill. You see they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.’

both places sound like hell to me. I cant imagine heaven as a place where i do nothing but eat and feed others all day. there is more to life, even an afterlife, than food.

I think in heaven, you're being fed really yummy food by hot chicks in bikinis. And it's always football season.

And hell is where everybody has to stand on their heads in fifty five gallon drums full of shit... :terror:

I've heard this illustration before by some speaker or another telling us why we should support welfare and other handout programs. When the Q&A came along, I said the following:

"What you've described sounds more like the free market, namely, that those with the resources to help others do so in return for receiving help. At best, it's charity, where those with the resources to help others do so voluntarily without need of coercion. What you've told us to support is a system by which resources are taken by force from those who have them and used to try to help those who don't have either the resources or the inclination to help anybody. Wouldn't that be more like a room where a large man with a gun takes all of the spoons in the room at gunpoint, then attempts to use them to feed everybody himself, leading to a highly inefficient system in which everybody, whether they're willing to lift a finger or not, gets the same amount of soup, but since it's all dished out by one guy trying to wield a dozen or so spoons, nobody gets enough and a lot of it is spilled everywhere and wasted?"

I never got an answer to my question.
