Governor calls for overhaul of Louisiana ethics laws

By DOUG SIMPSON
Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. — Gov. Bobby Jindal on Sunday opened a special session of the Legislature by calling for an overhaul of Louisiana's ethics code, to ensure "that corruption will no longer find a home here."

Jindal's speech, his first to House and Senate members, echoed a theme familiar from his 2007 campaign: his aim to cleanse Louisiana of its long-standing reputation for graft and patronage. He told lawmakers that his proposals — including forcing elected officials to publicly disclose their income sources — will boost the economy and bring more business to the state.

"The era of state officials profiting from their positions is over," Jindal said. "That era ends now."
