I respect Democrats more on a state level than a Federal level. I would easily vote for a Democratic Governor rather than a Dem President. My state of NC is known for this for one simple reason. People in NC are conservatives that strongly believe in Federalism. Let the states take care of health care, welfare, and education....Things like that. The federal government's main role, IMO, is to protect it's citizens from threats. Internal and External. This isn't my thesis on the issue, but I think you can see where I stand.

Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman, both for standing up for their beliefs.

Charlie Stenholm. BlueDog or YallaDawg or Rainbow Doggy Dog Dem. Congressman from W. Tx. He got beat after the Republicans did the redistricting thing and he had to campaign in a whole nother set of counties.

There are a few things I've respected in certain Democrats, while opposing the rest of their characteristics.

JFK cut taxes, for all the right reasons, and did a pretty good job staring down Nikita Kruschev. But he believed in socialism, couldn't keep his pants zipped, and did weird things with the military.

FDR did a lot to put the country on a war footing when it was necessary but everyone else didn't want to; and he was smart enough to let his generals call the shots when we got into WWII. But he compromised the Court system terriby and introduced rampant socialism and dependence upon government. History may yet record that he saved the country from militant dictatorships, only to destroy it with his own economic dictatorship.

Liebermann has his head on straight on Defense. Too bad he's a routine liberal extremist in virtually all other ways.

I've heard a few very good speeches from Zell Miller, but don't know much else about him except his party affiliation... which comprises a big red flag.
