BERLIN (Reuters) - The U.S. army has named Jeremiah W. Carmack as the soldier stationed in southern Germany who was shot dead by police last week.

The 2nd, "Dagger," brigade of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division, where Carmack was serving, is taking part in a joint investigation by the U.S. Army and German authorities, the brigade said in a statement late on Saturday, which named the soldier. Carmack was from Union, Ohio, the brigade said.

Police in the Bavarian region of Unterfranken said Carmack broke into the woman's house late on Thursday, threatened her and tied her up.

She was able to free herself and alerted the police. Officers found the soldier several hundred meters (yards) from her house and tried to arrest him but he threatened them with the semi-automatic rifle and was shot.
