Conservative House Candidate In Indiana Defends Speaking To Nazi Group On Hitler’s Birthday

On Sunday, Tony Zirkle — who is seeking the Republican nomination in Indiana’s 2nd Congressional district — delivered a speech to the American National Socialist Workers Party (ANSWP) on the 119th anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s birth. At the event, Zirkle “stood in front of a painting of Hitler, next to people wearing swastika armbands and with a swastika flag in the background.”

Asked by reporters why he spoke to a group like ANSWP, which refers to itself as “the largest and most active pro-white organization in America,” Zirkle said he’ll “speak before any group that invites me,” adding that he’s even “spoken on an African-American radio station in Atlanta.”

Zirkle told The News-Dispatch that he doesn’t “know enough about the group” to say whether he agrees with it’s ideology or not:

When asked if he was a Nazi or sympathized with Nazis or white supremacists, Zirkle replied he didn’t know enough about the group to either favor it or oppose it.

2008 is not the first time Zirkle has sought the 2nd district seat. In both 2004 and 2006, he challenged then-incumbent Chris Chocola. In 2006, Zirkle pulled in 30% of the Republican primary vote, despite calling for a return of the guillotine.

Since at least this past March, when Zirkle suggested that “the United States should debate segregating by race,” the local Republican Party has been trying to distance itself from Zirkle.”

He sounds like a kook.

He wants to ban pornography to boom the economy.

"He also claimed to be the 'pro-sex candidate' and said by shredding the magazine he was trying 'to set an example for men to put away their pornography and focus their attention on their wives.'

"According to Zirkle, the national economy would boom 'if more men were married and in healthy relationships,' because their creativity and untapped talents would be released."

Nah, not the new republicans the same republicans. He is taking his lead from John McCain and his acceptance of Rev Hagee.

"John McCain was delighted to be endorsed by the other John. Following the endorsement he said: "All I can tell you is I'm very proud to have pastor Hagee's support."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=uViQ0hVV57Q

"Just who is Hagee? Well, here in abbreviated form, are some of his characteristically outlandish opinions:

On Hurricane Katrina: “All hurricanes are acts of God, because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that… I believe that Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans.”

On the Catholic Church: “Most readers will be shocked by the clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic Church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews.”"

What new conservtives are there? did i miss the memo where there is a group of new conservatives?

i find it amusing that there are always people trying to create a "new conservative" movement to displace the actual conservative moment. Its just cheap political spin to muddy the term conservative and distract people from what conservatism stands for: The Constitution.

As for matters that are diversions from the topic of this thread, inquiring minds (atleast mine) want to know how you equate an political endorsement to a spiritual mentor. It doesnt seem that tough to figure out the difference. One involves a close personal relationship in which the mentor guides and shapes the candidates world view. The other simply says "Im voting for this guy."

It strikes me as entirely dishonest to seriously try to associate the two. Especially in an attempt to do a "who cares if we did something bad, so and so did something bad too" argument. its pure deflection. Such techniques are not the ones used by someone who has truth on their side.
