Eliot Wigginton, the Georgia school teacher whose students produced "The Foxfire Book," an acclaimed series of journals about their surroundings and local culture, surrendered to the authorities today, one day after pleading guilty to child molestation.
Mr. Wigginton, 49 years old, was indicted on Sept. 15 but had vigorously maintained his innocence until now. Since the indictment, however, local prosecutors have made known their intention to produce more than 20 people to testify that Mr. Wigginton molested them as children from 1969 to 1982. On Wednesday, Mr. Wigginton appeared in a nearly empty courtroom in Clayton, Ga., 100 miles north of here, and entered a guilty plea to a single count of molestation.

We need to clean our education system out. Clearly, school administrators aren't doing enough to protect the children.

Bottom line, the more intelligent pedophiles work hard to gain positions of trust. The administrators of said positions should be aware of this and on the watch for the likelihood of such employees, whether the Catholic Church, schools, service agencies, etc. The Catholic Church didn't, nor have the others. There are no excuses, just victims. Seems the Church was the first one to admit the atrocity.

On the other hand, as I've alluded to before, seems my diocese has chosen to tar the teachers and punish the students, in the name of 'Protecting all of God's Children.' As of 2 years ago, we cannot take students on overnight field trips. In the past we've taken the jr high to Washington DC, Boston, and Philadelphia, rotating years. In every case, the trips were from 3-4 nights, with local, armed security guards posted in hotel rooms, no adults in rooms with children. Adults had their own rooms. The trip was a fly to city, meet tour couch bus company. Not only were the teachers chaperones, but there were always other adults to observe the chaperones. Yet, now we cannot do.

A nice nationwide death penalty for being a pedophile would prevent alot of this shit.

If the kids are 16 and higher I say give them a slap on the wrist. There's no need for jail time there.

[Many news articles.]

Read your local weekly, Hawk, and you'll gradually get used to it. In my county not a year goes by but some male teacher gets caught groping his student, usually a male child. The bottom-line problem is that that they are teachers BECAUSE they are pedophiles: it wasn't just an accident, after all!! And sooner or later, they get caught.

Same deal with priests. It wasn't chance: the seminaries ATTRACTED such men, and everyone in the church knew it. I read articles about that at the time. They were homosexual and doing each other right in seminary, and they were attracted to young boys, and nobody cared!

I think the school systems care a lot, however, because it's always a big media thing, none of it good. But these guys go there because they get access to little boys, same as the Boy Scouts and all the problems they had, so there we are.

True, and although they are underage, I believe a 16 year old can consent to sex.
