Wal-Mart Stores said Monday it will offer 90-day prescriptions of some generics for $10, add several women's medications at a discount and lower the prices of more than 1,000 over-the-counter medications to $4 or less.

The move marks the third phase of $4 prescription program, which began in 2006 and has saved customers more than $1 billion, Wal-Mart said.

With the expansion, the company began filling prescriptions Monday for up to 350 generic medications at $10 for a 90-day supply at Wal-Mart, Neighborhood Market and Sam's Club pharmacies in the U.S.

In addition, the company will add several women's medications to its list of prescriptions available for $9, including drugs to treat breast cancer and hormone deficiency.

For instance, alendronate, the generic version of osteoporosis medication Fosamax, will be added to the list. Company pharmacies will fill 30-day prescriptions of alendronate for $9 and a 90-day supply for $24 at a comparison of $54 and $102, respectively, that women previously paid for the same amounts, the company said.

Wal-Mart also will lower the prices of more than 1,000 over-the-counter medications to $4 or less in its pharmacies, company officials said. The over-the-counter medication price rollbacks represent about one-third of the retailer's over-the-counter medicines. Included in the program are generic versions of versions of Zantac, Pepcid and Claritin.

Since 2006, Wal-Mart's $4 generic drug program has expanded to every state, except North Dakota, where Wal-Mart has no in-store pharmacies. And many company competitors have followed the retailer's lead.

Dang it! I was in Sam's Saturday morning and filled my new prescription, which in effect is a two-month supply, (60 12.5 caps), so that I can go back to one tab if indicated. Paid $8 for it, which beats my insurance co-pay of $10 for a month supply. (I would have paid $20 at Walgreen's).

I worked there, started at 7.50 an hour, and was making 12.25 an hour a year and a half later. How that's "bad" is just beyond, and who in their right mind snags a job in retail hoping to make "the big bucks"? They have medical, dental, vision for benefits, Employee stock purchase program, as well as 401k, direct deposit, store discount, Management Training program eligible to every who's been there 6 months or more, almost all positions are full-time, if you have the availability. What the hell more do you want, a doctor following you personally, checking every little last bruise you get?

Because it's the perfect example of how capitalism can provide goods and services to large amounts of people at low costs while still making a profit. That is the point of the company.

It also demonstrates how the private sector is much more efficient than the government.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s hard-fought battle to turn Chicago into a beachhead for urban expansion across the country has come to a quiet end, at least for the foreseeable future, as big-city politics held sway over low prices.

Now the world's largest retailer is turning its attention to a backup plan of opening stores just outside city limits, banking that thousands of low-to-middle-income city dwellers will travel to collar suburbs to shop at the discount store. Among the suburbs Wal-Mart is looking at are Calumet Park, Cicero and McCook, according to people familiar with Wal-Mart's plans.

Wal-Mart got the word from city officials last month that Mayor Richard Daley doesn't want to risk a messy showdown with unions over Wal-Mart—like the big-box store battle of 2006—while Chicago is still in the running as a host city for the 2016 Olympics, according to people familiar with the matter. The International Olympic Committee is slated to make that decision in October 2009.

"That's the end of the story, at least for the next two to three years," said John Melaniphy, a Chicago-based retail real estate consultant. "I think in the long run they'll end up in the city one way or another, but it's going to take them a long time."

Indeed they are. One is in Elmhurst, just outside of Cook County, many Chicago residents can be found there, along with at Oak Brook Shopping Center, Yorktown, and even in the grocery stores there. It's about a 20 minute drive from just inside the city. Taxes in Elmhurst, 6.75. Chicago is over 8. something.

I am 4 miles from a Wal Mart Super Center, Thanks to them, grocery prices have stayed somewhat stable in the area

The closest WalMart to me isn't a SuperWalmart because there is a grocery store literally right next to them. Mine does sell a variety of food items, but not the biggest selection. So, I have to make two stops, unless I go 13 miles north of me to the SuperWalmart. Sometimes worth it if I am by myself with the kids.

We have Giant, Weis, and some Mom and Pop stores - but Wal Mart has them all beat on prices

I will shop at Giant when they have their sirloin steaks on sale with a buy one get one free special. Other thne that, most everything I buy is from Wal Mart
