Senior American statesmen like George Kennan advised Kennedy not to rush into a high-level meeting, arguing that Khrushchev had engaged in anti-American propaganda and that the issues at hand could as well be addressed by lower-level diplomats. Kennedy’s own secretary of state, Dean Rusk, had argued much the same in a Foreign Affairs article the previous year: “Is it wise to gamble so heavily? Are not these two men who should be kept apart until others have found a sure meeting ground of accommodation between them?”

But Kennedy went ahead, and for two days he was pummeled by the Soviet leader. Despite his eloquence, Kennedy was no match as a sparring partner, and offered only token resistance as Khrushchev lectured him on the hypocrisy of American foreign policy, cautioned America against supporting “old, moribund, reactionary regimes” and asserted that the United States, which had valiantly risen against the British, now stood “against other peoples following its suit.” Khrushchev used the opportunity of a face-to-face meeting to warn Kennedy that his country could not be intimidated and that it was “very unwise” for the United States to surround the Soviet Union with military bases.

Kennedy’s aides convinced the press at the time that behind closed doors the president was performing well, but American diplomats in attendance, including the ambassador to the Soviet Union, later said they were shocked that Kennedy had taken so much abuse. Paul Nitze, the assistant secretary of defense, said the meeting was “just a disaster.” Khrushchev’s aide, after the first day, said the American president seemed “very inexperienced, even immature.” Khrushchev agreed, noting that the youthful Kennedy was “too intelligent and too weak.” The Soviet leader left Vienna elated — and with a very low opinion of the leader of the free world.

Kennedy and his bro Bobby were young and ambitious and wanted to change the world. get rid of the Mafia, communism, poverty etc. they had a lot on their plates. but they created a lot of enemies. maybe they just bit off more than they could chew. I was in HS when JFK was shot. I remember Castro was scared to death the US would blame him for it. and invade. and the soviets were deathly afraid the US was gonna lauch a nuke attack on them. its said that Khrushchev was so terrified he order his car to take him to the the US embassy and made sure the US knew he was not involved. now those were the days................

well that was really shocking for a 2 yr old. parents protected their kids from violence back then. I suspect someone from the USSR attended??? hmmm. not sure.

Hopefully a 2 year old wouldn't have been watching when Oswald was taken out. It was pretty disturbing at 7. ;) (2nd grade). I'm really not clear on how the communist countries reacted, but it's pretty vivid that Khruschev came to the funeral.

I was younger, what upset me most was my mom crying for 3 days and being out of school. That was scary.

The first I heard it I was in art class. A girl came into the room crying and said "they shot him, they shot the president." We all got sent home from school early that day. Everyone was expecting a war to break out at anytime.

I was in study hall. they let your carry those small transistor radio's around. that's how I found out. same here. they sent everyone home. it wasn't till around 95 I FINALLY got a chance to go to Dallas and see the 6th floor Museum inside the School Book Depository. link (link) Dealey Plaza is preserved for history. its the same today as it was the day of the shooting. I also got to stand where Abraham Zapruder filmed the entire event.

I still hadn't been born yet. However, I do see that Obama would not be near as capable of recovery as JFK was. After, JFK had some wartime experience to fall back on, what does Obama have? He's got a socialist wife who'll be busy chewing out people for dissing her man.
