The US president's trip comes as his popularity at home and abroad is at rock bottom following the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Stop the War Coalition is planning protests which will embarrass both Gordon Brown and the White House.
Number 10 officials are now desperate to "manage the damage" from the trip, say Downing Street sources.
One said: "Let's just say the timing is far from great. Bush is on the way out, and the idea of Gordon standing shoulder to shoulder with him is the last image we want out there right now."
President Bush starts a week-long farewell tour of Europe on June 9 in Slovenia........."
