There is no extra..The room 'cost' 25 which the hotel collected. The men payed 27. So really it seems to be more of subtraction problem than multip problem.

27-2 (that the bellman kept) =25.

there is no missing dollar

the hotel has 25
the three guys have 1 each
the bellhop has 2

that is 30

I wouldn't expect much more than a "hand" in a $25 dollar Hotel room. :laugh2:

Everyone has said this already, but here's a breakdown:

3 guys paid 30 bucks

Bellhop was told to give 5 back because room cost 25

So hotel has 25 and bellhop as 5 (total 30)

Bell hop keeps 2 and gives 3 guys a dollar each

So hotel: $25
bellhop: $2
3 guys: $3
Total: $30

The money the bellhop pockets is counted twice, while the $3 refund is uncounted. When it states that each man payed $9, that's the $10 minus the refund they got. The money the bellhop pocketed is included in the $9/person, meaning it should be $9/person * 3 people + $3 refund = $30.
