Interesting juxtaposition of two items I ran across this early morning:

and this discussion of serving in the military under Carter:
http://www.blackfive.net/main/2008/05/call-for-submis.html
...A certain candidate favosr eliminating, slowing or cutting back all current investments in future capacity. Some things he opposes outright -- for example, missile defense and space control (oddly, his chief military advisor, Gen. McPeak, was a strong supporter of space control -- is Obama actually listening to his chief advisor?). Other things he just want to delay or pare back, including the FCS. The result would be not just a weakening of America's actual defense in the moment, but a weakening of her capacity to strengthen herself at need. The failure to invest has two costs: not only do you have worn out equipment, but you don't have the experts on hand to help build better things to face current challenges.
Wolf remarked that this was very much like the Army he'd known in the Carter years, 1977-9. We'd like to ask veterans of that era to write in with their stories, the best of which we will publish here. What was it like to belong to such an Army, or Navy, or Marine Corps or Air Force?

I find no way to quote excerpts from above, they must be read in entirety. If on this issue alone, considering that whether or not one likes it, we are in wartimes, I will vote for McCain.

The military like all of life has its good and bad parts. One thing that amazed me was the waste due to having deep pockets and no need to prove requisitions were needed or even helpful. I served in remote areas due to job and I have never seen such waste and outright robbery especially by all the 'feather merchants' as we called them, who worked on military bases. But I don't want all these jobs etc to go away as they provide both economic and personal security for America. Many government jobs are a bit like working welfare. Carter can't be blamed as the military existed before and did fine after him.
This is the start of irrelevant BS from the partisan hacks imo.
Once we have UHC we can tackle mars.

Do you expect these idiots that don't even know thier own state senators to comprehend what you say, midcan5?

Republicans have deep pockets, alright. As long as those pockets are in your jeans. It goes back to Nixon solving the national deficit with social security surpluses and on into gwb attacking the ghosts of his own party's relationships with the more common American dollars and weapons.
It gets very deep, don't you know?

I remember hearing about 600 dollar toilets , but i dont remember when that was.
I think your analysis is quite correct.
When i worked at the v.a. i saw them being wasteful with drugs, and making each person wait 1.5 hours just to get their meds, it was disgraceful, and they didnt even give a dam about them.
The military, could do well to be nicer to those who serve, and not be so damn wasteful

The People in the pharmacy at the san diego naval balboa medical center
I didnt feel they truly cared
they treated um like cattle, in out, they wait 1.5 hours,
I am not sure if that is still how it goes, i think they switched to mailing them, this was 5 years ago, just as the war started.

psycho, no brings up this point... and i feel its important.
Can we afford the long term care that the physically and mentally injured warriors (soldiers) will need, including job training, housing, medical care, if the answer is no.
The next minute we should pull out.
You dont fuck with our soldiers.
I may not be a soldier, but that doesnt mean i cant respect them :cheers2:

You disrespected our VA employees and then excused it with a slam on active duty Naval Hospital inconsiderations, martin. Do you think for a moment that I disrespect either of them? You carry on with your repetitions of slanders that you can only agree with. I'll continue telling the truth, OK, martin?

Yes, I said it, and my expierience was, when i worked for the v.a. in 2003 i dont feel they treated active duty the way they should have, and even lately with walter reed, doesnt it just prove veterans are still not being treated the way they should?
why are you looking at that, and feeling angry at me?

LOL! This is one of the few posts I've made where it seems to be misunderstood from some on both sides.
Bottom line, Obama appears to be going the Carter road, which was not good in 'peacetimes' and surely would be more costly in war times.
