Olympic nightmare: A red tide in the Yellow Sea

By Jim Yardley Published: June 30, 2008

BEIJING: With less than six weeks before it plays host to the Olympic sailing regatta, the city of Qingdao has mobilized thousands of people and an armada of small boats to clean up an algae bloom that is choking large stretches of the coastline and threatening to impede the Olympic competition.

Local officials have initiated an all-out effort to clean up the algae by mid-July. Media reports estimate that as many as 20,000 people have either volunteered or been ordered to participate in the operation, while 1,000 boats are scooping algae out of the Yellow Sea. The official news agency, Xinhua, reported that algae currently covered a third of the coastal waters designated for the Olympic races.

Water quality has been a concern for the sailing events, given that many coastal Chinese cities dump untreated sewage into the sea. At the same time, rivers and tributaries emptying into coastal waters are often contaminated with high levels of nitrates from agricultural and industrial runoff. These nitrates contribute to the red tides of algae that often bloom along sections of China's coastline.

No one is forcing Americans to buy shit produced in a country with crappy environmental laws. Corporations can only profit if they can get the consumer to buy the product that was produced in a country that trashes the environment. YOU wake up and realize that it's not only AMERICAN corporations producing things cheaply in a fucked up country.

Exactly Dillo, these pricks will take any and every opportunity to criticize America. I guess we are suppose to believe all corporations that produce goods that Americans buy are American. Just like all of big oil is American :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:, the amount of ignorance from the left is hilarious and scary at the same time. These nimrods have a vote that is as powerful as the intelligent and truly informed people of our country.

They criticize WalMart when it is their constituents that keep them open, they criticize the cheap airlines when it's their own constituents and themselves that keep them in business, they whine about automobiles and it's their union member constituents that put out poorly designed and built cars. They bitch about the wars and yet they are the ones preventing wars from ending sooner by trying to micromanage them in the news media. They whine about energy use when it's they and their constituents that flock to places like Vegas and the big cities that use the most. They also want to prevent any ideas that could fix or help aleviate these problems because they come from the other side, the left offer no solutions, just weak ass criticism.

Hey midcan0......:fu:

I woud like to see any item with any Chinese ingredient in it be required to disclose the same on its packaging. I'm not sure we can otherwise tell. I was reading that the shopping channel, QVC, sells what they term "Chesapeake Style" crabcakes. As it turns out (deceptively I think), though the implication is that the crab comes from the Chesapeake, in actuality, only a tiny undisclosed percentage is from there. The bulk of the crab comes from China.
