How does this happen? How is it that the most powerfull nation on Earth isn't also the happiest one? I think it starts with the "Liberty and Justice for All" words in our Pledge of Allegiance that most ignore so often.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Denmark, with its democracy, social equality and peaceful atmosphere, is the happiest country in the world, researchers said on Monday.

Zimbabwe, torn by political and social strife, is the least happy, while the world's richest nation, the United States, ranks 16th.

Overall, the world is getting happier, according to the U.S. government-funded World Values Survey, done regularly by a global network of social scientists.

It found increased happiness from 1981 to 2007 in 45 of 52 countries analyzed.

"I strongly suspect that there is a strong correlation between peace and happiness," said Ronald Inglehart, a political scientist at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, who directed the study..........

"Though by no means the happiest country in the world, from a global perspective the United States looks pretty good," Inglehart said. "The country is not only prosperous; it ranks relatively high in gender equality, tolerance of ethnic and social diversity and has high levels of political freedom."

How does Puerto Rico rank above the US? Are they not a territory and soon to be state in the US?

And they are obviously very happy the way they are. Why do you insist on obfuscating that fact? Do you have any answers for the questions that I asked or are you just tipping your post count? What did you think about that gender equality observation?

15th out of 52 is pretty good.

Power doesn't always equal happiness. Just as wealth doesn't make people happy.

As for the "liberty and Justice for All" in our pledge I don't see what that has to do with any part of this article or our nations happiness.

Yeah, it's in our nature to 'strive' for more; whether it be 'toys', money, justice, equality, etc. By our nature, there will be brakes on our happiness.

This came out earlier this year. I saw a Dateline NBC on it i think. It was one of the news mag shows anyway. They have a very egalitarian society due in large part I think to how homogenous their society is. It also has a lot to do with their social progams as well. Healthcare, mass transit, etc.

Everyone defines happiness in their own way. For me, that means maximum freedom. I would not be happy in a socialist country.

The Danes are so happy because no one knows where they are.

True story:

This last Saturday I was sitting for a haircut, a guy sits in the chair next to me for his trim. The gal cutting his hair attempts to strike up a conversation with this new client. She is having trouble understanding him due to his accent. Turns out, he's visiting from Denmark. When he tells the girl he's from Denmark, she asks:

"Where's that? In Australia?"

I damn near lost an ear.

To me that shows how ignorant most Americans are of the world around them as well as the failures of our education system. I guess ignorance isn't bliss though since we're what, 16th on that list?

Getting kicked in the teeth or worse is not a good reward for the striving as you intimate, kitty.

You can keep your toys, money and even whatever equality as you imagine but this ol' soldier for America expects and even demands JUSTICE as you also intimate.

Do you have a problem with that? Spit it out. Maybe we can finally discuss something on an intelligent level. I don't accept your so-called "brakes on our happiness"? Can you dig it?

I will always have a special place in my heart for denmark, because unlike most of europe, they didnt just send their jews to die.

If any european country had to be #1, im glad it was denmark

You excuse the murder of Muslims and otherwise innocent Islamists but you condemn the murder of the Jews in WWII? Interesting. Pitiful, but still interesting.

I did not excuse the murder of muslims.

That is ridiculous.

But thanks for assuming what i believe we should do with muslims.

What do you believe we should do with the Muslims? And, to extrapolate the question, what do you assume the Muslims intend to do with the Christians?

Is religion in government your answer? Our founding fathers thought it inadvisable.

What do you believe we should do with the Muslims?
In america, (moniter mosques, and if we find any terrorists plots stop them, and all others muslims leave them alone)

Muslims in muslim countries: moniter mosques: stop terrorist plots, leave all other muslims alone

muslims in europe: deport them, they are too big of a threat

muslims in the rest of the world: monitor their mosques, stop all terrorist plots

Now, no where in there did i say, kill them.

But I believe islam is the greatest threat to the world, but if you wanna demonize more go right ahead

And, to extrapolate the question, what do you assume the Muslims intend to do with the Christians?

I believe that many, want us dead. Now, do i know for sure if thats 20% of 50% no, but do i wanna take that chance, absolutely not

Is religion in government your answer?

I dont know what youre talking about, what does this have to do with what were talking about?

Our founding fathers thought it inadvisable.

as i said, i lived there.......i spell it danmark......and it is a nation the size of some us metropolitain areas....such as the bay area.....and i found them very similar......there are seedy areas of danmark and counterculture areas....and racial and gender strife.....

maybe you should go live there so you could have experiences to back up your opinion........

Nice idea. Free passage on the Queen Mary. It would be cheaper than having them live here.

But the true answer requires more comprehensive abilities than most here indicate to possess. Don't 'ya think?
