"I don't know what's the matter with people: they don't learn by understanding; they learn by some other way, by rote, or something. Their knowledge is so fragile!" Richard Feynman

I have been listening to reasons why some would not vote for Barack Obama and one mentioned often is lack of experience. When Bush Jr ran for office the very same people excused his lack of experience claiming he would select good smart people who would give him sound advice. So why isn't BO given the same leeway? He is certainly a great deal smarter than W, has done a great deal more, and he too will have good smart people to consult with, so ask yourself why is it a negative in one case and not the other? Is it partisanship or racism?

Um... President Bush had experience. He was the freakin governor of one of the largest states!

Seriously, are you just dense?

So questioning Obama's experience level compared to another politician who had years more experience within government operations is somehow connected to Obama's skin color?

Damn. Even Evel Knievel couldn't have made THAT leap.

Obama isn't running against Bush. Why is it so many of his supporters continually compare Obama to Bush? Bush is a non-entity.

Is it partisanship or racism?

Why does it have to be either? Why can't a voter look at Obama's platform, evaluate the things he says, the things he does, the choices he's made, his experience, his values, and simply decide that he's not the guy they want sitting in the White House? It's not always a racial thing, and it's not necessarily a partisan thing. Maybe a voter just doesn't agree with him. Is that a possibility?

That being said...

I didn't hear a whole lot about W's lack of experience when he was running. When it was mentioned, the refrain I heard most often was, "He has experience, he is the governor of Texas. He has been running one the largest state governments in the country. He's been able to cross the aisle in Texas and get the two parties to work together." Now, while that experience didn't translate as well as we might have hoped, the argument at the time was still valid.

Now, as far as experience goes in this election, neither candidate has had the benefit of having run a state. So how does one choose? Since I have no intention of voting for either one of them, I can't really say. My inclination would be to look at each candidates accomplishments in their respective jobs, their judgement, their values. Did they do what they said they were going to do? How long have they held the job? How many times were they elected to the office they hold? Did they represent their constituancy well? Does their platform represent me and my beliefs? If not, which one comes closest?

You claim that Obama has done a "great deal more." Really? Like what? And please don't take us down Memory Lane, stick to his professional career.

You know, the people I hear most talking about race are the Obama supporters. And just about everything they say is the same, if you don't support Obama, you're a bigot. Well guess what, I don't support Obama and I'm not a bigot. It;s not because he is Black that I will not be voting for him, it's because he does not represent me of my beliefs. I do not believe him to be the best man for the job.

As a side note...

I ask you, what of all those who say they are voting for Obama because he is Black? Are they not racists?

Um, concentrate on every fuck up of Bush's in the last 8 years, and tell me why we're thinking, "Um, maybe someone with more experience".

I have heard and read often that the governorship in Texas is a figurehead position. Link below for one pov.

Not a very far leap, sure my two year old granddaughter could do it. Question is why?

Same reply above for Texas. And another thought is the infrastructure supports the worst fools in our system. We have had some incompetents here in Philly but somehow the city kept running. And large city mayors probably do more than figurehead governors. If I looked at something Obama did recently, he ran a darn good campaign and beat an unbeatable candidate.

Stephanie, surprised a woman would vote against women? And are you absolutely sure in your heart of hearts which side you are voting against? You know what Freud said, the best we can do is be honest with ourselves.

Statist? and another ideologue on the SC would not make use more like a fascist state? This argument loses me give the decisions from this court against the individual and for the corporation or state.

Dragon, agreed, but we can hope and McCain is the same old same old.

No argument with you on McCain, hence why I'm not voting for him, either. I'm sick of voting for the least lame duck, and if you really want change, then stop hoping for it, and find a candidate who gives it you, or better yet, a candidate who realizes that the change needs to belong to the people as well, not just be done for us.

I wonder is it better to lose with morals, integrity and dignity or win by any means neccesary.

I think you just answered my question

If you want change, then forget about the candidates. Start by changing yourself. Then those in your family. Then those surounding you.

Already working on that on multiple counts. I've been getting involved in the local politics here, and I'm actually receiving pretty positive feedback. Mostly, it just seems like everyone's kind of been hanging back waiting for a leader to emerge, and I remember this one thing I got told in high school, "If you cannot find the kind of leader you would want to follow, then be that leader."

I think that's some of the problem, we all know people who would be an excellent leader, but they just don't seem to be taking that lead.

It can only go one direction, see. You can vote FOR Obamabama because he's black, but you can't vote AGAINST him because he's black. http://macg.net/emoticons/confused1.gif

This has already been said, but it's worth repeating.

The media did comment on Bush's lack of experience and it has turned out to be a bad thing. Why place Obama in the same position??

1. Who says he's smarter? Kerry supporters said the same thing and we came to find out his grades were worse than Bush's. I'll wait for the transcripts.

2. What's he done????????

I'm not voting for him because I disagree with his politics. If I were a dem I'd have a hard time voting for a man who, after he won the Illinois Senate he immediately ran for US Senate, and again immediately started running for Pres. What has the man done? From what I see he hasn't even finished the jobs he was already elected to do. He voted 180 times present.
