Change? Nope, just the same old, worn out far-left nonsense

Plus, the mesiah has given us ANOTHER flip flop - now he is for tapping the tapping the reserve

Obama Calls for Opening of Strategic Oil Reserve, Windfall Profits Tax

Barack Obama was ready to unveil another shift in his energy policy Monday, reversing his opposition to tapping the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve as means of lowering gasoline prices.

Obama’s campaign previewed a speech he’ll give in Lansing, Mich., saying he’d like to release a portion of the 700 million barrels of oil kept in salt caverns in Texas and Louisiana. Obama also is expected to call for a revival of the windfall profits on oil companies.

The latest shift in Obama’s energy policy follows comments over the weekend that the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee would be open to limited proposals for new off-shore drilling. The change drew a charge of flip-flopping from John McCain’s campaign.

Earlier this year, Obama supported capping new additions to the reserve as a way to ease pressure on gasoline prices, but not specifically tapping into the reserve. In July, he said he didn’t support tapping the reserve, saying it only should be used in a “genuine emergency.”

But increasing fuel costs have led some Democrats — chiefly House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — to look to the oil reserve for fresh supplies.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Heather Zichal said that while Obama didn’t initially support tapping the reserve, he has reconsidered. “He recognizes that Americans are suffering,” she said.

With more and more of this socialist crap, and his endless flip flopping will show this clod has piss poor judgement and can't make up his mind on anything; except jacking up taxes on everybody

that is not so. I know many people who do not support Obama who are far from being hate filled racists... some in my immediate family!

Two points:

1)If drilling for more supply won't affect the price as the Democrats argue, how does opening the strategic reserves and increasing the amount of gas on the market going to change the price?

2)The government already makes 3 times more profit on gasoline than the oil companies. How is taxing them more going to drive down the cost of oil?

1) It won't change the price much; it will just run us out of oil for when the Iranians actually USE the new magic torpedoes they announced today on blowing out the Strait of Hormuz. That strategic reserve is for war. Using it to lower gas prices when we aren't even in a recession would be .......bold, very......bold.

Stupid, actually, IMO.

2) It won't drive down the cost of oil. Exxon will simply raise the price at the pump, so we'll end up paying for our own thousand-dollar rebates. Maybe it's a first shot in the urge to nationalize oil, like we're going to nationalize health care. Pretty soon everything will be nationalized, like in Venezuela. Chavez is nationalizing some more banks today, the Wall Street Journal said.

Oh, wait, that's what we're doing with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Yep, get in a Dem, or whatever, nationalize everything.

The messiah said how oil is the threat, and how we off to get off oil in our lifetime

This guy is a clod and an idiot on economics

Any tax will be passed on to the public in the ofrm of higher prices at the pump, higher food prices, and people will lose their jobs because of the higher cost of doing business

Oil companies will not spend as much in investments, and exploration - and the price of oil will go up

Remember folks, Pres Peanut Carter did this in the 70's and it made things worse back them as well

RSR, this isn't exactly SUBTLE, you know. What, Obama is offering the voters $1000 to every adult, the summer before Election Day??? I think we all know what to call that, though in the really old days, they mostly had the grace to talk about a chicken in every pot, rather than open dollar bribes.

Vote for Obama! Get a thousand dollars!! [Sigh]

Yea, get a grand from the messiah (paid for by oil companies) and pay more in gas, pay more for food, pay more in taxes to offset the higher cost of gas for government cars and trucks, and you may lose your job because your company is paying more in taxes

1. If opening up new supplies in ANWR supposedly won't lower prices, then how will the reserve?

Well, in fairness, there WOULD be less lead time to get the oil out and to refiners from the strategic reserve than from unexplored, unmined country in the far North.

I don't see that as the problem. I see the problem as then when Iran starts shooting up tankers in the Persian Gulf, we have no oil to get along with till we settle their hash.

Mundame, it is a temp solution and the oil released would have to be replaced

Let the oil companies do what they do best. Let them find, drill, pump, refine, and deliver the finished product

1. ANWR is hardly unexplored, and can produce oil in 18 months. The "ten years" that is routinely cited is due to government red tape, lawsuits and all the protests and crap that the producers have to deal with. Besides, ten years ago the Democrats told us we can't drill there because it would take ten years to produce anything.
2. Good point about Iran. In fact, the inherent instability of the middle east and our dependence on foreign sources for 70% of our consumption are the main reasons why speculators have managed to drive the price of oil so high. If we had ANWR and offshore areas we wouldn’t be in this position to begin with.

Let the drilling begin, and start building new refineries and the price of gas will drop

Thanks, glockmail. War is the whole point of the strategic reserve -- that's what the word "strategic" means, in war planning: the part of war that includes the home front. Theirs or ours.

I suppose one could think of weird disasters that would shut us off from shipped oil ---- asteroids, major terrifying epidemic when the borders had to be closed, etc. --- but the reason we have oil stored in salt domes is because of war. War always, always affects American shipping, and it sure would with Iran, that would be their first target, tanker traffic.

So I do NOT approve of opening up the strategic reserves for anything less than dire emergency. To talk about doing otherwise is just pandering to the voters, IMO.

Libs are libs because they don't understand basic economics. There are many, perhaps most, economists that don't understand as well.

Prices dropped as soon as Bush rescinded Bush 41’s restriction on off shore drilling. That alone made the A-habs sweat.

The strategic reserves were originally created for that purpose. Unfortunately, both Democrat and Republicans have since used then for price lowering schemes. I disagree with both Parties on doing that, but I find it amazingly hypocritical that Obama ignores huge supplies that Congress- heck I’ll be blunt and put it right in Pelosi’s lap- has deemed of limits.

Cheaper oil and gas is the last thing libs want. Pelsoi and Reid refusing to allow a simple up and down vote on drilling shows they want high prices. They think it will get them more votes in November

Deep pocket libs who have their money in tax shelters or off shore accounts and wil not be affected by higher taxes It’s foreign currency that they have invested in, like the Euro. As Democrat policies force economic slowdown in the US and increasing imports (like oil), the dollar will continue to weaken, and the value of the Euro will rise respectively. That’s how Soros made his first billion and the entire reason why he supports rabidly liberal US politicians. His minions are just too dumb to see it happening.

You think it is as simple as that?

I was assuming it's this business of wanting to force Americans off oil onto another, new energy platform. Short of war, high prices probably ARE the only way. However, certainly Pelosi and Reid are willing to let the war go on and on and on and on though everyone with a functioning brain could easily see they COULD have stopped it, just as Congress stopped the Vietnam War. But they didn't, so they'd get more votes in November.

Well, you could be right about the oil, too. Let us pay, and blame Bush. And not vote for McCain.

Not at all. We have HUGE oil reserves sitting in the ground. it is the liberals along with the tree huggers who want to make America lower its standard of living

More the 60% of oil and natural gas reserves are of limits. WHY?

Libs are in bed with the tree huggers, and they think high gas prices will get them more power

As with the war, they don't care what we want and need, they care that we blame Bush and then don't vote for McCain.

Okay, it's a good argument, and you may be right that this is all there is to it. Dems TALK like they are trying to force a platform shift, but they talked about ending the war, too, and they didn't bother.
