Within record profits and the admiration of the world's best in labor considerations, tell me it ain't so?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Source: Poughkeepsie Journal Staff

IBM is cutting pay by up to 10 percent for some manufacturing workers at semiconductor operations in Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill.

In January, the company will discontinue premiums for shift employees who work seven 12-hour days over a two-week period, said IBM spokesman Jeff Couture.

Reaction from an employee group, the Alliance@IBM, was quick and negative.
"People are not happy. This affects employees in manufacturing who only make $30,000 a year," said Lee Conrad, national coordinator for the Allliance, a local of the the Communications Workers of America.

A total of about 3,500 employees at plants here and in Essex Junction, Vt., would be affected, but Couture would not say how many at each facility. He would not explain why.........

The announcement comes just after two events in IBM's world. Gov.. David Paterson announced a deal to help IBM expand certain operations in New York and retain some Dutchess County jobs. Also, in Vermont, a little over a month ago, IBM announced 180 job cuts at the Essex Junction plant, dropping the employee tally to about 5,400, the lowest there in more than two decades...........

IBM also, as many companies have, stopped funding pensions for employees. America has chosen to go down a dog eat dog, social darwinist path in which only the rich are protected by rich man's socialism. Without unions, and trying to complete in a global market, worker's earnings and even jobs will only continue to disappear. I strongly recommend the book noted below for a sense of the issues and how they impact the lives of working Americans.

Excellent suggestion, mc5!!!!!!!! If only more people understood the impact on their own lives these intimidating and overbearing legislators have. Given the truth and nothing but the truth, there would only be a few thousand republicans left in this country!!!!!!!!!! Not that any would leave, they certainly didn't before deregulation, but those that admire the environment, desire a fair days pay for a fair days work, are willing to contribute to the society that has contributed to their own well being and hold those responsible for the denial of our constitutional rights, well, they would all convert to the Democratic Party, the genuine party of the people in 2008.

sounds to me like a couple of people are bringing politics into a techie forum.

I know many people who dont want to be part of unions cuz they find them counterproductive and corrupt. Clean up the unions and maybe more will joint them. They are just as dirty as big business, but the press dont hound em.

Also included in the article.

Those workers have been earning a 20 percent premium over their wage, plus overtime pay.

Workers would receive a base pay increase in January that would partially offset the cuts, Couture said.

I wonder if the 7 12hour days in a row was a temporary thing that the company is now ending, the article doesn't say.

Although the article does say the workers are getting a pay increase later this year and only 3500 people are affected by this pay change.

That's a rather callous and insensitive remark, don't you think?

Not when you consider how many employees they have.

How do you figure, Trigg?

Not when you consider how many employees they have.

It would be just as callous and insensitive if it was only 1 in a million.

It's the cost of doing business.

We also don't know if the 7 12hr days in a row was a temporary thing that the company has discontinued.

The company isn't hanging them out to dry. The article says they're getting a raise in Jan. to offset the pay cut.

so, one in a million is just as insensitive as 3500 out of 4000? Hmmm, no wonder your arguements are always so loopy.

Personally, I dont believe, even you, really think that

Actually, girlie, yes I do believe exactly that.

Injustice for one is injustice for us all, don't you know or is that just too abstract for your feeble mind?

This one got buried and I don't often visit this particular forum as I am generally not much interested in the "techie" conversations unless they contain labor considerations, don't you know??!??!??!??!?!
