We really do NOT need the Government:

Report: U.S. oil consumption down 800K barrels a day in first half of 2008

American oil consumption fell by an average of 800,000 barrels a day in the first half of the year, according to a new Energy Department report.

"The decline in U.S. consumption in the first half of 2008, reflecting slower economic growth and the impact of high prices, was the largest half-year consumption decline in volume terms in the last 26 years, when, in the first half of 1982, consumption dropped by nearly 800,000 bbl/d," the Energy Information Administration says in its monthly energy report.

The government's statistics are based on a comparison of data from 2008 with those during the same period in 2007. They show that global demand continued to increase.

"[West Texas Intermediate] crude oil prices, which averaged $72 per barrel in 2007, are projected to average $119 per barrel in 2008 and $124 per barrel in 2009," the report says. "Regular-grade motor gasoline retail prices, which averaged $2.81 per gallon in 2007, are projected to rise to an average of $3.65 per gallon this year and $3.82 per gallon in 2009."

Nevertheless we get it:

"The decline in U.S. consumption in the first half of 2008, reflecting slower economic growth and the impact of high prices...

The Bush regime destroyed the economy and caused the high prices.

I want to see the removal of government from everywhere. But as long as one corporate body exists then it will be impossible to achieve that dream.

and folks do what libs tell them - drive less, use less gas, and conserve

In reponse, Dems now want to raise the gas tax since less gas tax revenue is coming in

You forgot a very important factor. In fact, we would NOT have reduced our oil consumption, if not for the direct and pervasive influence of government.

By banning almost all expansions of drilling, banning the use of established wells such as those off the CA coast, banning drilling in ANWR etc., putting impossible restrictions on the construction of new refineries, pipelaine, power lines etc., govt at all levels has been the main reason oil prices went up, causing Americans to drive less, turn down the air conditioning etc.

Oh, but you said we do not NEED government? That's a slightly different point. One with which I cannot find argument in this situation.

Dude, make your mind up. You either want the high prices, or you don't. If you don't then stop standing in the way of lowering them. If you do then screw you.
