Reuters/Zogby Poll: McCain Makes a Move, Takes 5-Point Lead Over Obama

Obama loses ground among Dems, women, Catholics & even younger voters

UTICA, New York – As Russian tanks rolled into the Republic of Georgia and the presidential candidates met over the weekend in the first joint issues forum of the fall campaign, the latest polling includes drama almost as compelling - Republican John McCain has taken a five-point lead over Democrat Barack Obama in the race for President, the latest Reuters/Zogby telephone survey shows.

McCain leads Obama by a 46% to 41% margin.

And McCain not only enjoys a five-point edge in a two-way race against Obama, but also in a four-way contest including liberal independent candidate Ralph Nader and Libertarian Bob Barr, the poll reveals. In the four-way contest, McCain wins 44% support, Obama 39%, Barr 3% and Nader 2%.

This latest Reuters/Zogby poll is a dramatic reversal from the identical survey taken last month – in the July 9-13 Reuters/Zogby survey, Obama led McCain, 47% to 40%. In the four-way race last month, Obama held a 10-point lead over McCain.

Obama's average in all the polls is now down to 1.9%

It has been by all accounts a 10 point swing in the polls.

Ok, now it is time for the Obama supporters to fall back on their #1 talking point and play the race card

The liberal media is now in full attack mode over Obama's drop in the polls

LAT Blames Obama Poll Drop On 'Attacks' By McCain
By Dave Pierre
August 19, 2008 - 22:54 ET

The Los Angeles Times is still fighting for their man, Barack Obama. Last June, when their man's poll numbers looked groovy, the Times proudly trumpeted their presidential poll results with a just-the-facts headline, "Obama holds 12-point lead over McCain, poll finds." But now the paper's candidate of choice is in trouble. A new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll shows John McCain and Barack Obama in a statistical dead heat, with Obama ahead 45% to 43%, within the three point margin of error.

So how does the Times frame the results of their new poll? "Barack Obama's image suffers amid John McCain attacks, poll finds." Apparently, the Times has a hard time acknowledging that people are simply learning more about the candidates, and more are simply deciding that Obama is not their guy. The Times would rather blame Obama's receding lead on "attacks" by McCain.

The Times also conveniently ignores the fact that the DNC and Obama have engaged in "attacks" of their own, including the labeling of Senator McCain as "Exxon John" and equating a McCain presidency to "Bush's third term."

A double standard in headlines? Absolutely.

We should fully expect Deranged Liberal Syndrome to kick in and we'll see them screaming about how its all because of "attacks" from the "right-wing nuts".

I love the fact Obama is now losing the Electoral College count. Now we do have about 75 days to go - but the trend is looking good to prevent Dem control of the government

If Obama did that he would have to hire a food taster, and have someone run in front of his limo checking for landmines

Sorry to spoil the party, but I have a hunch that's RCP's screen for people who want them to REJECT the idea of toss-up states. So RCP looked at each state, including those where the difference is less than 1% (a statistical tie), and call them one way or the other anyway.

RCP maintains a different page where they DO identify some very-close states as tossups. It shows Obama ahead among states where the margin is enough to not be a statistical tie.

See it at http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/maps/obama_vs_mccain/ .

The good news? In November, that last "poll" will have NO tossup states. Even if the difference is so tiny as to be Floriduh-like, EVERY state will be called one way or another... just like the poll that Kathianne shows above.

In many of those toss up states Obama's lead has been on shrinking. With over 70 days to go, it is way to early to say McCain will win

But the trend is not looking good for Obama

Obama: McCain ‘Doesn’t Know What He’s Up Against’
by Associated Press
Wednesday, August 20, 2008

RALEIGH, N.C. — A combative Barack Obama said Tuesday that Republican John McCain “doesn’t know what he’s up against” in this election and challenged his rival to stop questioning his character and patriotism.

Obama, campaigning in a state where he hopes to become the first Democratic presidential candidate to win in more than three decades, implored his supporters to fight for the presidency.

“Our job in this election is not just ‘win,’ although I’m a big believer in winning,” Obama said during the rally. “I don’t intend to lose this election. John McCain doesn’t know what he’s up against.”

“He can talk all he wants about Britney (Spears) and Paris (Hilton), but I don’t have time for that mess,” Obama said.

His remarks carried forward a theme of feisty campaigning he debuted earlier in the day.
