Earlier this month, a California activist began gathering signatures to put a state wealth tax on the ballot. The measure would impose a new 35% income surtax (in addition to federal taxes and the existing 10.3% top state rate), and penalize people who leave the state by seizing 55% of assets exceeding $20 million.

WTF is WRONG with people who support this kind of thing? WHY is socialism so loved?

Upper bracket Fed Income Tax = 35%
Upper bracked State Income Tax = 10.3%
Social Security and Medicare (employee portion) = 7.65%
State Sales Tax (average) = 8%
add this additional tax = 35%

That is damned near 96% marginal tax rate and we are not counting property taxes in there!

California's economy is in trouble already because of taxes and enviro-wackos but hey lets drive out the rest of the business and sell the state to China or give it to Mexico.

Wealthy people are gonna get it stuck to them if they stay or leave. If they stay they will be hit with a heavy tax and if they leave they will be hit with an exit tax.

While this will be bad for California it will probably be good for the other states. The wealthy will go elsewhere and the other states will see the exodus in California and not do the same. People will start getting all their money out of the US if this happens so it doesn't happen to them.

I agree completely. If it looks like they're going to get screwed they'll relocate and leave the poor to their own devises and who would blaim them. I've already seen the commercials begging people to come to California.

The truely rich will leave before the new tax takes place, they tend to be well connected and will know if something like that is likely to pass.

BTW, little april, you CAN live in a place where the rich have gotten out. Several such places exist today, and tickets to them can be had fairly cheaply in most cases. Ethipoia, Cuba, and some of the more remote villages in China come to mind.

In all likelyhood I will live only another 5 or 6 years. So I will not be wealthy again.
