RECENTLY, THREE stories about housing were in the news. Although they may seem unconnected, they are closely linked and we need to pay attention to the messages they convey.
Following the lead set by Scotland, France would elevate housing as a social right, on a par with education. Despite calls for a right to housing in the United States, notably by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1944 as part of what he called a Second Bill of Rights, this country has only articulated a national housing goal: "a decent home and suitable living environment for every American family."
But this rhetoric has not translated into a commitment to action.
In the absence of the political will to supply consistent and sufficient public resources, federal, state, and local governments have taken an indirect route by providing incentives to the private for-profit sector as an enticement for them to enter the realm of "affordable" housing. This brings us to the second story.
......................................
This story brings us back to the first. Without a guaranteed right to housing in the United States, thousands of households are struggling to find and keep housing they can afford.
In the absence of sufficiently well-funded public programs that provide long-term assistance, we will continue to grapple with how to squeeze housing out of inadequate funding. Despite inappropriate profits, we need to exercise restraint about condemning a proven strategy for producing decent affordable housing.
A well-funded, multifaceted federal right to housing program would enable us to meet needs of residents of this state and across the country. Chapter 40B is only part of this complex agenda; Massachusetts could be a leader in articulating the goal of a right to housing for all residents -- and then delivering on this promise.

This is more crap about guv'mint housing. I grew up around Boston, and guv'mint housing was the place where you didn't walk through and all the criminals grew up.

Alright, government housing stories, sort of like horror stories, only worst.
When I was stationed outside of St. Louis, at a missile site, we went by this fairly new government housing project, 3 years old, I believe.
The buildings were vacant, and so torn up you would of thought they had been vacant for many years. There were 3 high rise building with parking, and playgrounds. Located in a fairly nice neighborhood, not anymore.
We had an inside man, so to speak, on of the troopers stationed with us had an Aunt who lived in the neighborhood during the construction, and while the place was filling up. He said she told him it was like , what she would think living in a war zone would be like. Shootings every night, police on constant patrol. The Mayor said they were going to win this battle, and set up a "sub-station" in the lobby of one of the buildings. They lost, the buildings were closed by the Fed 3 years later.
Yep, Federal subsidized, low income housing, works every time. Just look at New Orleans.:poke:

......Yep, Federal subsidized, low income housing, works every time. Just look at New Orleans.:poke: Exactly. Let them find their own places to live. Private landlords aren't going to put up with that crap.
There's a place in Winston-Salem that they just tore down: Happy Hills. It was all poor blacks, and a goddamn nightmare. I did some work on the re-build. It turns out that there is a cemetery in the middle of the area, with about 200 or so graves of blacks dating back to pre-civil war; a slave cemetery. Do you think those losers would clean it up and make a nice park out of it? Not quite. It was filled with trash.
This demonstrates the #1 problem that the poor have: no respect for themselves.
If that was my neighborhood and the cemetery was filled with poor Irish that died building railroads and such, we'd have that cleaned up and restored as a model to the community.

Good news, they’re tearing down most of the public housing in Atlanta!
Bad news, the rats were loosed and have spread throughout the metro area now!

I can't wait for the rats to come to your neighborhood. They will infiltrate your neighborhood, attend your schools and start dating your kids.
Otherwise, it is generally a bad idea to subsidize housing and extend benefits to those people who have lost their jobs due to cutbacks by American corporations. Profits are always more important that people.

The school board put the rats in our schools about 10 years ago. What was a good system is a total disaster now. Go figure.

I would like to know why Americans deserve a right to housing? or why some people believe so.
I don't believe anyone has a right to housing. They have a right to provide housing for themselves IE they have the right to work hard to get themselves a home. But you can't give people a right to housing without work.
Because unless someone works, they can't put up the house or build the housing unit. If you give someone who does no work the right to another persons work, you are in essense making those that work slaves.

I think they should have a right to shelter or it atleast it be avialble. Moms with babies freezing to death in the streets wont look good on us. Even drug heads don't desearve that. Sure it may be their fault but we as a society don't want to see it and as such should provide housing to keep from seeing it.

So you think we should bandage the wound because we don't want to look at it? Why not go in and scrape it clean so it can heal? Sometimes people do get into dire circumstances, but we have many help programs available. Some people don't WANT help; they want to be served. You think we should stick them in free housing so we "don't have to look at it"? I think we should all look at it, and say, "If I don't get off my butt, that's where I'll be."

Find a bunch a bunch of people dead in the streets from the elements and you will see an outcry. It's doing to humane thing, sure no top notch housing but some shelter from the elements should be considered for a country with as much to spare as we do.

Perhaps we should take her babies away, adopt them into stable homes, and put the old lady on a work farm, all female so she can't have anutha?

What iof the babies black handicapped and can't get adopted so easy. As for work prison no but long term shelter should require work from the sheltered in some form. What I'm talking is temp shelter for when it's dangerous to be outside.

Shelters for those in need at times of desperation need is one thing. The right to housing for all is another. The author of the article is promoting the federal right to housing.

That's exactly the problem. Why don't those who would cry out after they find dead bodies in the street give them shelter BEFORE they die ?

Homeless shelters are one thing. Government subsidized slums are another. Government housing is like a cloud of locusts. It completely destroys any area it touches, leaving nothing but trash, crime, and condemned buildings in its wake.

I think those that want a socialist society should be offered a one way trip to the socialist country of their choice and the U.S. will pay the entry fee for that person, they lose their U.S.citizenship and can't come back. Hell, we could even cut them a check for 50 grand. It will definitely be less expensive in the long run.

There is no "right" to housing. And guess what? 99.75% of all Americans have homes right now. The other 1/4 of 1% should sober up and/or get off their lazy butts and work to provide for themselves.

nah, they would just use the money to buy guns and things for terrorists. Let them live off the government of their choice.

Have you ever lived near one of these places, or are you just talking out of your ass???
Are you one of those liberals who live in a gated community and yell about diversity for others while living in a lilly white area and going to a lilly white school??
If so you have no idea what your talking about. Get out into the world and around gov. housing and you'll understand why people say they are drug infested.
Now, I"m all for HUD, because those people help build the house and generally aren't looking for a handout, just a little help. Gov. housing, on the other hand, puts hundreds of poor people together. People who have been on assistance for generations and have no intention of doing better.
