By Terry Kinney
Associated Press Writer / October 11, 2008
Email| Print| Single Page| Yahoo! Buzz| ShareThisText size – + CINCINNATI—A federal appeals court sided with Ohio's top elections official Friday in her running battle with Republicans over how to verify the eligibility of newly registered voters.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals set aside a federal judge's order a day earlier that Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner institute the means to verify voter registration information and make it available to Ohio's 88 county election boards.

I'm with you av. As an Ohioan,I am outraged, and from reading around on the net I can see that many others are too. Why in the world would someone in charge of elections NOT want to verify that voters are real?!!! Or that there aren't made up voters?

First of all.she is lazy

Second, she,in my opinion, believes those fraudulent votes will be on Obama's behalf.

Greta Van Sustern has been covering this and has the Sec of State's e mail to let her know what people think. Ohio is very important in any election. This really sucks that we don't still have Ken Blackwell. He didn't take crap from anyone. Republican or democrat.

no doubt. Between the economy and a candidate that is sooo far left,it seems people are more divided than ever.

Can someone appeal an appeals court decision?:coffee:

My husband put up a McCain/Palin sign in the yard yesterday. Of course, this morning while my neighbor and I were talking about the economy, she had to say...."well your voting for the wrong person if you want things to turn around""

I told her that I don't vote for socialists.:salute:

Conservatives have been complaining for four solid years about leftists saying the Ohio election was stolen from Kerry by the GOP in 2004. Rightists have been calling that "whining" for four years.

So how is this different? The election hasn't even happened yet and conservatives are already saying the other side is stealing the vote in Ohio?

I think they probably ARE indeed, but I don't see how you can denigrate people complaining about voter fraud and then go straight to doing it yourselves.

Because there was no proof. We have proof that the left is enganged in rampant election fraud. Heard of ACORN? :poke:

Okay, that's a good argument.

It doesn't look too good, however. Ohio needs to get a lot more squeaky clean than it is if it's going to be a central battleground again and again.

Florida was never stolen by anyone in the first place. You're delusional if you think it was.

Let's face it our electorial system is already undermined. No matter who wins there are claims of cheating. If people feel like theyve been cheated there is more of a chance of a violent reaction. this is not good for the nation and this is exactly why there should be complete above the board oversight. So the people know the process is legitimate

As Hawk pointed out, there was no proof. There has been accusations of this fraud in 9 battleground states. Funny how it's just in the battleground states, isn't it? Why wouldn't a honest Sec of State want to make sure that the election is clean?

I'm also not going to go so far as to say if McCain looses,it's because of voter fraud and Jennifer Brunner.I do wonder tho,why this election was prretty much neck and neck and then all of the sudden Obama takes a good lead in the polls. When the left looses,it's ALWAYS because someone must have cheated them.

Perhaps because the fraud found in 2004 was all on the Democrats side? Mind you, I'll complain about Ohio SOS and the court ruling. I may well criticize the election results, but I won't spend the next 4 or 8 years whining about it.

Truth is, with the exception of the small window at and shortly after the election, McCain has waged a horrible campaign. No need to steal it, he's begging Obama to take it.

By the time that could be accomplished, my guess is that it will be too late.

I can't believe that a Registrar of Voters would appeal to the courts asking that the courts allow her to avoid doing her job, yet keep that same job.

OCA, I didn't agree with the bailout. It's something that I disagree with Bush on. He is gone in less than 100 days tho. I'm talking about the guy who looks like he may win this election. Obama stands for nothing but big governent all around, and wonderful things like cutting taxes for 95% of Americans when 40% don't even pay taxes. Government run health care, the Fairness Doctrine. Not to mention,as big of a deal as the bailout is.....IMO,Bush doesn't want to control my speech and any other aspects of my life.

Something you might like to know tho......at my brother's house this weekend. My hubby, brother and I actually talked about you-lol!!! If I'm correct, you want the Republicans to loose as a kind of slap in the face....to wake them up. I actually brought this up over there and we talked for a while about how maybe that could be a good thing.

I still can't vote for Obama tho....it's just too dangerous. I think Repubs are allready hearing the message ,loud and clear.

Are Libertarians pro life? I didn't think they had a definite stance on that.

There are some good conservative Republicans still out there. Steve Chabot, from Ohio,is a great one. He got my SIlLs mom a disability check after her diabetes made her go legally blind. She was initially turned down. She wrote him a letter explaining to him that she had worked all her life and raised a family(was even shot at one of her jobs) and was denied this check when she truly deserved it.

Within two months she recieved her first check.

Not really, but neither is Mundame.

Libertarians believe that the government should stay out of the issue of abortion, which when you think about it means that they are on the pro-choice side of the issue.

Court casts doubt on Ohio voter rolls

By Jon Craig and Dan Horn • jcraig@enquirer.com | dhorn@enquirer.com • October 14, 2008

....

Late in the day – in a victory for Republicans – the full Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a decision made last week by three of its members. The result: Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner must create computer programs to cross check all new voter registrations so that county boards of elections can doublecheck new registrants.

The Secretary of State will now have to verify new registrations by comparing information on them with data from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles or the Social Security Administration.

“As far as we can tell, the problem with the current system (of cross-checking) is not that it is insufficiently user-friendly, but that it is effectively useless,” wrote Judge Jeffrey Sutton, writing for the majority.

The court split 9-6 along mostly partisan lines. The only appeal would be to the U.S. Supreme Court, and it wasn’t clear Tuesday night if that would happen.....
