McCain Attacks Los Angeles Times Over Its Refusal to Release ’03 Obama Video

By RICHARD PÉREZ-PEÑA
Alleging media bias in favor of Democrats, Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin seized Wednesday on The Los Angeles Times’s refusal to release a five-year-old videotape of Barack Obama at a dinner honoring a Palestinian rights advocate.

The video shows a gathering in Chicago for Rashid Khalidi, a teacher, writer and Obama friend who is critical of Israel. Mr. Obama spoke at the dinner, where other speakers likened Israel and Israelis to terrorists. The McCain campaign said the tape could show how Mr. Obama reacted to anti-Israel remarks.

Mr. Khalidi, now a professor of Arab studies at Columbia University, opposes Israel’s occupation of territory it seized in the 1967 war and has defended Palestinian resistance to the occupation. He advised a Palestinian delegation at a 1991 peace conference and has written several books on the Middle East.

The Los Angeles Times said it had been given the video on the condition that it not be shown to anyone else. In an article published in April, the paper disclosed the tape’s existence and described the dinner. The article said that in a speech there, Mr. Obama spoke of frequent discussions with Mr. Khalidi and dinners at his home, and also called on the people of the Middle East to find common ground....

You know I could care less if Obama isn't gung ho pro-Israel, I know I'm not. But he should be a man about it and just say so. He is a complete hypocrit for pretending to be for Israel just to get the Jewish vote in battleground states. But, anything to win an election right?

Releasing the video would enflame extremists and degrade the discussion of legitimate issues. The newspaper is acting responsibly and should be commended.

No, it would piss off Jews as well as expose Obama for being a two-faced hypocrit. And every voter should be able to see that before they cast their vote.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/30/us/politics/30campaign.html?ref=politics

Isn't it odd that the GOP was all in favor of journalistic privilege during Scooter Libby's trial for very real crimes which journalists were key players and witnesses for the prosecution.

The LA Times is claiming journalistic privilege regarding the video made of a banquet honoring Columbia Professor, Rashid Khalidi, where Obama gave a keynote speech. They promised to protect the source of the video, and they are abiding by that promise. But since the tape is a perceived, wrongly, negative for the Obama campaign...they want the LA Times to renege on their promises to their source. Quels hypocrites.

The fact is that the McCain campaign and the rest of the RWN talking heads really don't want the video...they hope to get more mileage out of false claims of malfeasance on the part of the LA Times and a non-connection between Obam and Khalidi, and BTW McCain has far more substantial ties to Khalidi than Obama.

2. so you are saying your party is EXACTLY like the repubs when it suits you

3. why release something to the media and them tell them not to release it?

Engaging without illusions might be one way to describe how diplomacy would be conducted in an Obama administration. Just like with Iran, he would engage on Arab-Israeli peace. Not because he knows it will produce peace, but because he again understands the consequences of disengagement. Who gained when the Bush administration walked away from peace making for more than six years and then in its last years pursued it incompetently? Hamas, because like all radical Islamists, they gain when there is hopelessness and frustration. Who lost? Those in the Arab and Palestinian world who favor a two-state solution but need the possibility of peace to make their case and to have the political space to build their authority.

It is my Middle Eastern hat and my attachment to Israel that ultimately inspires my support for Obama. I saw first hand his appreciation for Israel's predicament, its needs and his instinctive and emotional commitment to the relationship. But more than this, I know he understands that neither Israel nor America can afford four more years of Iran and the radical Islamists gaining strategic leverage in the Middle East. Slogans won't prevent that. A fixation on Iraq won't prevent that. 'Twas the night before elections

And all through the town

Tempers were flaring

Emotions all up and down!

I, in my bathrobe

With a cat in my lap

Had cut off the TV

Tired of political crap.

When all of a sudden

There arose such a noise

I peered out of my window

Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet

They wanted my pay

To give to the others

Who had not worked a day!

He snatched up my money

And quick as a wink

Jumped back on his bandwagon

As I gagged from the stink

He then rallied his henchmen

Who were pulling his cart

I could tell they were out

To tear my country apart!

' On Fannie, on Freddie,

On Biden and Ayers!

On Acorn, On Pelosi'

He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause

And as he flew out of sight

I heard him laugh at the nation

Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think

On this one final note-

IF YOU DONT WANT SOCIALISM

GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

the Israelis have the best national defense on the planet. so go back to picking your nose and eating it !!!!!:thumb:

No one has brought this nation closer to a fascist state than the Bush administration. The USA PATRIOT Act, and its follow up he and his apparatchicks railroaded through Congress in the wake of 9/11 gave Bush powers that Hitler would have been envious of even after the German Parliament passed the Enabling Act of 1933 in the aftermath of the burning of the Reichstag. And lets not forget the executive orders and signing statements Bush issued to further undermine the Constitution and secure power in the hands of the Executive Branch.

Of course, if Obama turns out to be another dictator wannabe like Bush, I'll do everything in my power to see that it doesn't happen. If it's doing the "Danny Deever" for me then so be it.

As for being "weak willed and weak minded", your inability to offer up a rational and reasoned rebuttal is a true demonstration of those qualities in your self.

Actually, Congress got quite a bit done in the last two years in spite of Republican obstructionism, as can bee seen at the Library of Congress website. Republican filibusters scuttled Senate action on Iraq...Please do cite evidence of "panic" on the part of Democrats regarding domestic oil drilling, and it was Bush who went begging to the House of Saud for increased oil production only to be turned away empty handed.

As for your peurile insults, they only serve as further proof of your own weak mindedness and lack of will. Unlike you, I have never stated a willingness to leave the country in the event of the presidential election going to someone other that whom I choose. You, sir, lack the courage of your convictions in your willingness to abandon your country instead of taking every legal action at hand to ensure the sanctity of the Republic and the Constitution.
