Obama Gets New Presidential Limo

President-elect Barack Obama's new ride has arrived.

The Detroit News reports Tuesday that a new model of a presidential limousine made by General Motors Corp. has been delivered to the Secret Service.

The armored 2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine will make its debut at Obama's Jan. 20 inauguration in Washington.

The Secret Service and GM say they'll reveal more about the custom vehicle's specifications next week.

Older-model presidential limos will remain in use. The previous model, a modified Cadillac DTS, was introduced at President George W. Bush's second inauguration in 2005.

You can't really blame him for the limo, I'm sure it wasn't really his choice, but rather a cost that is built into being president, like air force one.

the reason for the new limo is obvious.

Obama needs a limo with a hole in the roof, in case he needs to ascend.

Yes, of course, he certainly couldn't use the limos that the current President is using, they have white man cooties in them.

The new limo will be a "lowered" version with rims that cost more than the limo - and do not forget the spinners

You know how Dems love to spin things

Oppos, now I am banned forever from NBC

The insensitivity here is astounding! What makes y'all so damn sure he will require 28" wheels. He may very well go with just 22" ers! See.... this is the type of unfair treatment to expect from the right. Assuming before we have even seen his new carriage that it will have larger wheels and be more expensive. Maybe if you guys would calm down a little and let the man get his limo first you will see that there will be no 28" wheels on it.

And furthermore.......... he IS the president! Soon he will solve all the problems of the world and you will eat your words. You just watch..... you'll see!

When did this new limo come into development? Was it intended for Obama or the next president of the US before it was decided?

New President, New Limo, GM Says
Official Limousine Makes Debut At Inauguration

President-elect Barack Obama's new ride has arrived -- and it's a beast.

The Detroit News reported Tuesday that a new model of a presidential limousine made by General Motors Corp. has been delivered to the Secret Service.

The new vehicle will make its public debut on Inauguration Day, ferrying Obama down Pennsylvania Avenue and beyond.

It's the first presidential limousine not to carry a specific model name, said GM spokesman David Caldwell.

The Secret Service and GM told the Detroit News that would reveal more about the custom vehicle's specifications next week.

Older-model presidential limos will remain in use. The previous model, a modified Cadillac DTS, was introduced at President George W. Bush's second inauguration in 2005.

The Secret Service has been known to refer to the presidential limousine as "the beast."

I thought the same, ergo if McCain had won he would be getting this limo, I wonder if rsr would have the same problem with it if it was a new limo with added security fir Pres. McCain.

I can see the liberal media's reaction if this was McCain's new limo. "High unemployment, the economy tanking, people losing their jobs - and PE McCain gets a new limo. Isn't the old one good enough?"

A new limo for the new president?
GM rumored to be finishing fortress-like armored Cadillac
By Gregg D. Merksamer, New York Times News Service | November 8, 2008
After President Obama takes the oath of office in January, he may have a new black limousine to go along with his not-so-new White House. General Motors is believed to be putting the final touches on a new First Car.

An analysis of unauthorized photographs taken while the car was being tested last summer on public roads suggests that the presidential ride will be a truck-based Cadillac. It will presumably replace the Cadillac that President Bush has used since 2005....

For example, television clips showing George W. Bush entering and exiting the rear doors of his limos indicate that the windows are at least 5 inches thick, nearly twice the depth of what was used on presidential limousines in the 1980s and '90s.

While I do not know what type of weapons such thick windows are designed to guard against, a half-inch of transparent armor is enough to stop a .44 Magnum round at point-blank range; at a thickness of 1.25 inches to 1.5 inches, the same material can withstand bullets fired from military assault rifles.

In an attack, the ballistic forces of bullets fired into the windows would be absorbed within a succession of glass and plastic layers, after which a flexible inner coating known as an antispall shield would keep glass from entering the passenger compartment.

Though the materials protecting the car's body are also classified, they are probably intended to break up incoming projectiles with a hard substance before their energy is dissipated by a softer one. Material traditionally used for this purpose includes dual-hardness steel, aluminum, titanium, and ceramics.

Large steel overlaps are also typically added to the body openings of armored autos to deter attackers who might try shooting through the door gaps.

Denied convertible tops and sunroofs, and seated behind glass that is half as transparent and several times as sound-absorbent as that of a standard car, the president has limited interaction with the public. But he can make his presence known by turning on fluorescent interior lighting that makes him visible to bystanders, or by using the built-in public address system.

Aircraft tie-downs welded to the chassis allow the limousine to be transported aboard a military cargo jet, which also often carries the Secret Service's Suburban escort vehicles and at least one limo used as a backup or decoy.

On television footage of a trip to Pakistan in March 2000, it appeared as though President Clinton's motorcade used five decoy cars.

Thus, it is likely GM is building not just one new presidential limousine, but perhaps two or three that can be used as backups or decoys. There will be no way of knowing until the cars are seen together....

I do hope the chosen one makes sure to always keep his tires inflated to the proper pressure.

Why is Obama replacing the 2006 Presidential Limo w/ an upgraded one?

With the economy the way it is, Government spending with the Democrats now in charge about to go ballistic, why doesn’t Obama continue to use the old limo and return the new one back to GM and save the taxpayer’s money?

Obama said he would go through the Government’s budget line by line and make cuts to save the tax payers money

He was lying of course, and has no intention of cutting anything. He is the messiah and in his view deserves only the best that taxpayer money can buy

Thrust upon him? Come on Noir - I know you tilt left - but Obama is "the man"

As I have said before, after all the promises and change he said he would bring, so far it is the same old same old

What difference does it make Noir? he can decline it, or sell it

Obama could say he wants to save money and continue to use the old one and, at the same time, keep his campaign pledge to make cuts in the budget.

He could set the example of making sacrifices in order to save money but, that would require leadership skills. Something Obama has never had.

you know he could do plenty of things, he could rent out rooms in the White house fir huge sums of money for a weekend stay, afterall it's big enough and all that extra money would be saving tax payer dollers right?

The real test of Obama and his promises will come when he is in power and making important decissions, not on crap like this.
