EL PASO - Mexico is one of two countries that "bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse," according to a report by the U.S. Joint Forces Command on worldwide security threats.

The command's "Joint Operating Environment (JOE 2008)" report, which contains projections of global threats and potential next wars, puts Pakistan on the same level as Mexico. "In terms of worse-case scenarios for the Joint Force and indeed the world, two large and important states bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse: Pakistan and Mexico....

How can a collapsed country collapse more?

If the government implodes and the drug/other criminal leaders take over, it will be Afghanistan at our doorstep, with refuges galore.

Close, but not total. There are people like MFM considering Mexico for retirement. I have a teacher at my school that has built more or less a mansion down there, for under $200k. The illegals that were coming here, (which has slowed down thanks to the same with our economy), were for the most part hard-workers that wanted a chance to make money and return.

That would change drastically if the government in Mexico City collapsed. Right now the problems are at the border, (killing law enforcement at points of crossing to run drugs). If the cartels could run the country, the whole enchilada would become a drug haven and crime capital, the middle class and higher would be fleeing here. We are in no position to have that influx of educated folks swarming in.

I was just getting ready to start a thread U.S. Military: Mexico Could Collapse Under Drug Violence, Corruption

“In terms of worse-case scenarios for the Joint Forces and indeed the world, two large and important states bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse: Pakistan and Mexico,” the report states.

The plans call for aircraft, armored vehicles and special teams to converge on trouble spots along the border. Military forces would be used if civilian agencies like the Border Patrol and local law enforcement were unable to control the violence.http://www.newsmax.com/headlines/mexico_co.../14/171339.html (http://www.newsmax.com/headlines/mexico_collapse/2009/01/14/171339.html)

Question for debate:

What actions should the US take to eliminate the possibility of the Mexican government failure?

What actions should the US take should the Mexican government fail and anarchy prevail on our southern border?

Should Mexico be annexed if their government fails?
