Why am I not surprised?

A tax cheat will head the IRS and the Dems yawned over his deliberate attempt not to pay his taxes

I guess he felt he had already paid his fair share, and refused to pay more. Until Pres Obama offered him the job, then he decided to finally pay up

Dems are shifting the liberal culture of corruption into overdrive

Timothy Geithner confirmed as US treasury secretary

The US senate has confirmed Timothy Geithner, the former head of the New York City Federal Reserve branch, as the new treasury secretary in the Obama administration

The vote, which went 60 to 34 in Mr Geithner's favour, puts him at the helm of Mr Obama's plan to rescue the economy.

But the confirmation was not without controversey. Some senators were concerned that Mr Geithner, who will oversee the government's tax collecting agency, did not pay all of his taxes until he had been nominated to the president's cabinet.

Mr Geithner said the oversight was unintentional and has settled his $34,000 overdue tax bill. He apologised for the errors, calling them "careless".

His supporters said the nation cannot afford to wait for Mr Obama to search for a new Treasury chief.

A guy that heads our national trearsury doesn't think he had to pay taxes?

It's even worse than that, he kept the money he was given to pay them.

And the liberal media gives him a pass by repeating the Dem's mantra of it being an "innocent mistake"

Remember how the liberal meida and the Dems went after Joe the Plumber over a $1,200 tax lein?

It's even worse than that, he kept the money he was given to pay them.

From what I've read, he was advised by his tax accountant that he wasn't liable for the payments at the time, and likewise the tax software most American's use to pay their taxes (TurboTax) also didn't show him as needing to pay it.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on the IMF moneys, and he did pay the bill.

What gets me is that he also got hit by what once was known as "nanny-gate", not paying proper taxes for someone working in your home. That is something I thought every politician should have known about.

Geithner Kept Reimbursements For Taxes He Didn't Pay
Thu, 01/15/2009 - 11:59 — Judicial Watch Blog
Barack Obama’s Treasury Secretary-designate not only cheated the U.S. government out of thousands of dollars in taxes, he actually pocketed money that his employer gave him as reimbursement for the taxes he never paid.

A national news magazine reports that Timothy Geithner’s problems are much more serious than previously reported. Besides failing to pay the U.S. government $34,000 in taxes, Obama’s pick to run the agency that ensures the nation’s financial security kept money earmarked as restitution for taxes he didn’t pay.

At the time Geithner, considered to be a brilliant financial markets specialist, worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which oversees the global financial system. For years (from 2001 to 2004) Geithner didn’t pay Social Security or Medicare taxes on his lucrative salary yet he gladly cashed the IMF’s tax restitution checks.

The IMF gives employees an extra allowance, known as gross-up, to cover tax payments. To get it employees must file a detailed tax allowance request and the organization then follows up with a check to cover the amount.

Geithner filed and signed the requests for years but didn’t follow through with his obligation. The forms clearly commit the employee to pay the taxes for which he or she is receiving a tax allowance payment from the IMF. For years Geithner accepted the allowance yet blew off the Internal Revenue Service as well as the commitment he had made by signing the official form.

It wasn’t until Obama recently tapped him to be Treasury Secretary that Geithner decided to finally pay his hefty tax bill. Otherwise, it seems he had no intention of correcting his serious wrongdoing. Incredibly, he may soon head the nation’s crucial economic rescue plan at the agency that supposedly promotes economic stability.

Interesting, hadn't seen that before.

I'd have to concur then that he's a bad choice for the post, in addition to the obvious nanny-gate issue I mentioned.

Of course if you fair tax folks want a good case for changing the system, he might be the guy you want in office. He is proof positive about how convoluted our current tax structure is.

Worse then that, VP Biden must consider him unpatriotic

Joe the shitbag plumber still hasn't settled.

Obama's admin. and supporters settle debts, Repubs and their supporters make excuses as to why they cheat America.

Doesn't matter when he settled and hell he owed 34,000 or so, Joe only owed 1500 or so and the tight old liberal prick McCain wouldn't help him out, just sent him out to get the shit kicked out of him.

he only paid because he knew it would come up in confirmation hearings, not because he wanted to. obama annoints him and magically the next day he has the money to pay off.

and you want to talk about the size owed, good lord dude, then obama's holy one is more guilty for not paying 34K. and he took refunds on taxes he DID NOT pay. yeah, real honest, but with you, put a D by their name and they can do no wrong.
