Savoring win, Obama celebrates `major milestone'
WASHINGTON – Savoring his first big victory in Congress, President Barack Obama on Saturday celebrated the newly passed $787 billion economic stimulus bill as a "major milestone on our road to recovery. "

do you understand the difference between calling obama arrogant for celebrating that it passed politically and NOT economically. this is similar to bush declaring mission accomplished before the overall mission was accomplished. at least with bush though, saddam's government was ousted, so that was accomplished. with obama, the ONLY thing accomplished at this point is that he convinced dems to vote for his spending plan. oooooh, big deal.

with that said, i hope i am wrong and that this obscene amount of money does fix things. what is likely is that the economy will fix itself and of course the dems will take the credit.
that single sentiment highlights the difference between you and your "intimate friend", RSR... He does NOT want the stimulus bill to save the economy. He wants it to fail because he does not care for the United States of America unless his party can run the whole show.

I'll bite, I don't want IT to succeed, I want the US to succeed. Even in the best light this package would only make a small dent in the failure of our monetary policy and the impending tax hikes. In the worst scenario this expands the role of government not to mention the increased debt load. If the economy does start to turn around the uninformed will falsely assume that this package had something to do with it opening the door to further intervention by Washington.

I think the ONLY thing that will save us is if the money is NOT distributed.
If it is I fear we're toast. I'm even considering pulling my 401 money an paying the penalty an tax before it's ceased.

No, he showed how disconnected congressional Republicans are from the rest of the nation. You only consider it arrogance as the GOP now constitutes little more than a regional party. Frank Rich said it most eloquently...

Because Republicans are isolated in that parallel universe and believe all the noise in its echo chamber, they are now as out of touch with reality as the “inevitable” Clinton campaign was before it got clobbered in Iowa. The G.O.P. doesn’t recognize that it emerged from the stimulus battle even worse off than when it started. That obliviousness gives the president the opening to win more ambitious policy victories than last week’s. Having checked the box on attempted bipartisanship, Obama can now move in for the kill. - Frank Rich

Much as I wish he would, though, I don't see Obama moving in for the kill. He'll just keep giving congressional Republicans all the rope they need to hang themselves.

What I "hope for" is irrelevant. We got into this mess because of government sticking its nose into the business of banks, and we reward the government by giving it more power to do more of the same. This is a recession, the economy is shrinking, so why are we making the government bigger instead of scaling it down to match the economy? We all know the answer- Washington Liberals lead by King Hussein want the next three generations enslaved to the government.

If this bill is needed so badly to fix the economy, why is Obama waitng until tomorrow to sign the bill in Denver?
Does he want a huge photo op where he won the nomination, rather then a photo op at the White House?
President Obama Expected to Sign Economic Recovery Bill Tomorrow
The imposed President's Day deadline has arrived, and there is an approved final version of the economic recovery plan on the president's desk waiting for his signature. President Obama is expected to sign a 787 billion dollar plan at a ceremony in Denver tomorrow. Debate over the bill went on for several weeks and led to some hard feelings between Democrats and Republicans. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says the White House is hoping for a more bipartisan attitude on future projects.
"We hope that Republicans will decide they want to reach back. We understand that nothing is going to get done in this country to improve the lives of the American people if the parties in Washington continue the same old game and continue to fight only by working together, can we move this agenda forward," said Gibbs.
President Obama moves on to the housing crisis as the next item on his economic agenda. He will be in Arizona on Wednesday to make an announcement on a program to help homeowners on the brink of foreclosure.

Roberts: Resistance to 'Stimulus' Bill 'Irresponsible,' Stephanopoulos Pushes Bank Nationalization
By Brent Baker
February 16, 2009 - 00:50 ET
ABC's Cokie Roberts denounced as “irresponsible” conservative opposition to the “stimulus” bill and suggested those who voted against it should be punished, declaring on Sunday's This Week: “I just think that when you're in a situation like this, to do nothing is so irresponsible that you can't, you can't get away with it.”
Earlier on the show, host George Stephanopoulos pressed Congresswoman Maxine Waters to agree banks must be nationalized: “A lot of economists now saying that what is really -- could be needed is bite the bullet nationalization.” Citing a professor's op-ed, “Nationalize the Banks! We're all Swedes Now,” Stephanopoulos recited the argument “we should just do what they did when they faced their crisis. They nationalized the banks and they came out of it okay.” When the far-left House member resisted -- “I don't think that we're ready to move to the point of a formalized, nationalized banking program yet” -- Stephanopoulos pleaded: “Even if it's the only thing that would work?”
