Air Force One Photo Opp Triggers Panic in Manhattan
A photo shoot involving a 747 used as Air Force One and two fighter jets flying at low altitude led to hundreds of frightened calls from residents and workers in Lower Manhattan this morning, triggering memories of 9-11 as many evacuated their offices. The president was not aboard.
Although the shoot was authorized, the normal system of public notification broke down, multiple officials said.

In N.Y., Low-Flying Planes Panic Locals, Infuriate Lawmakers
White House Apologizes for Not Warning of 'Aerial Photo Mission'
By Tomoeh Murakami Tse
Washington Post Staff Writer

NEW YORK, April 27 -- A plane used as a backup for Air Force One and a fighter jet escort swooped low in the sky over New York Monday morning as part of a government photo-op, panicking workers, forcing evacuations and prompting an outcry from lawmakers.
The White House later issued a profuse apology over the incident.
The flyover -- involving a 747 that is one of two used by the president and an Air Force F-16 fighter jet -- took place in Lower Manhattan's financial district and caused traders, construction workers and others to flee for safety. An Air Force spokeswoman said the "aerial photo mission" was authorized to take place in Lower Manhattan and New Jersey and was to last 30 minutes.
The New York Police Department said in a statement that the flight was authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration "for the vicinity of the Statue of Liberty." It added that "local authorities" had been told not to disclose information about it and to direct inquiries to the FAA.
The FAA did not return calls for comment, but a spokesman there was quoted earlier today by news agencies as saying local authorities were made aware of the flight before it took place.
The flyover infuriated New York lawmakers, who said they were not notified in advance and lashed out at federal authorities. The Air Force referred calls to the White House, but White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, when questioned about the matter at his daily briefing, said he was unaware of the photo mission.
Louis Caldera, director of the White House Military Office, subsequently said in a statement that he approved the mission last week.
"I take responsibility for that decision," Caldera said. "While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused."...
this happened on obama's watch but he will get a pass from libs and the MSM

Caldera, the guy in the Obama administration who coordinated this whole deal needs thrown under the bus - preferably at mid-town and without any security detail.
Think New York voters will remember this come 2012? Think anyone will be ready, willing and able to remind them?

The only issue I have with the post is...it wasn't Air Force One. Air Force One is only designated such when the president is aboard.
Other than that, the MORON that arranged this should be hanged!

What was the cost of work stoppage, emergency responders, 911 telephone calls, etc. for this publicity stunt? \
What price will America ultimately pay for Obama’s ego?
"Has the adminstartion forgotten all about 9/11?"
My response, "Yes some have."

Once again, nothing this administration does surprises me.
It's just one more example of Obama and his cabinet being out of touch with the reality's of what happened on 9-11.
Out of touch with the reality that we have been at war.
Out of touch with the pain that America feels and felt over 9-11.
What a buffoon!

lulz, trust Americans to blow everything out of proportion, it's difficult to work out just who was more moronic
A) Obama admin for setting this up
B) the people of new York for failing the emergency services when they could see fighter jets with the plane
C) Some of the above posts which are using said story to imply that some folk are out of touch with the events of 9/11

just because there were fighter jets behind it doesn't mean that everything was ok. for all they know they could've been postioning to shoot it otu of the sky at one wrong turn.

I'm not sayin it was all ok because of the fighters, but if the plane had already be hi-jacked and was being followed by the military what good would phoning 911 serve? As I would like to think that in such a situation the military would have informed the state services.

I believe the president's photo op fly over was to announce to the people that "it's a day (the 100Th) for all Obama lovers to feel proud and to commemorate his accomplishments of the first 100 days.
That's what it was, but people didn't stand in the streets, with women fainting and men getting a tingle up their leg. Instead the people of NY were very scared of that plane in the sky for over 30 minutes, flying close to the "ground zero" location, and around other sites.
BTW Noir, the avitat I had clearly expressed how the liberals are in deed screwing all us, and how the Dems are the party of double standards

So Obama says he didn't know about this photo op. He was "furious" when he heard about it.
Well, that really doesn't help Obama either.
Because either the man is INCOMPETENT in his call that he would go "line by line" on the budget and manage things, or he doesn't know what's going on around him.

After Asking For Ideas to Cut Spending This Weekend Team Obama Drops $328,835 On a Photo-Op
After asking for ideas to cut federal spending this past weekend in his weekly YouTube Address, the Obama White House freaked out New York City residents by sending two fighter jets and Air Force One to buzz Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty on Monday morning for a photo-op.

Were not many people in Manhattan terrified by the plane flying so low over ground zero? If the answer is yes, then whoever allowed that plane to be flown over Manhattan had no idea what kind of impact it would have on those terrified people, or they knew and just didn't care because an Obama photo-op outweighs the concerns of Americans. If they didn't know that it would terrify people then they are out of touch with the reality of what those people went through on 9-11. They are still obviously suffering from some measure of PTSD.

"During an interview on Air Force One, Gibbs said if President Obama had had "any knowledge of the stupid idea to go take pictures of the plane in New York, I can assure you that wouldn't have happened."
A retired Secret Service that called in on Rush Limbaugh and basicly stated, They have contingency on top of contingencies and wherever the President goes they plan, plan plan... they know where those planes are, and to say they did not know is a lie.
Why is it that whenever it is anything in the least damaging OB has no idea, wasn't there, was only 8 years old, etc etc. My god that guy has an excuse for everything. I simply do not believe they didn't know.
