The May Unemployment Numbers are Here, and Worse Than Predicted June 5, 2009

While I was waiting for May’s numbers to be released I did a quick Google News search on “unemployment.” Here is the first set of entries that popped up:

Pittsburgh unemployment rate falls to 6.9 percent Bizjournals.com - Unemployment in the Pittsburgh area inched down in April to 6.9 percent…
US Economy: Jobless Claims Fall, Productivity Rises Bloomberg
US jobless claims fall again, productivity rises Reuters
Jobless claims are down, but work remains scarce AP

You get the feeling that there’s a little pre-spin effort afoot? I mean, why put up an article on April’s unemployment on the day that May’s numbers come out? And while jobless claims did fall, interpreting that information without the unemployment rate is very difficult.

In any case, here is the new number for May: 9.4%, which is 0.2% higher than we had shown in the chart from a few days ago:*...

One would think after $4 trillion in Federal spending we would see some improvement.

What we are seeing is more pople losing their kobs, the annual deficit increasing, the national debt doubling, and Dems running out of excuses why the hope and change is falling flat and making the econmic conditions worse then they were before the so called stimulus bill was passed

BTW, some Dems have the gall to say we may "need" a second stimulus bill since so many people are losing their jobs

Right, just getting started with the closing of how many plants, dealerships, service centers and auto parts makers? How many state governments at the brink of insolvency? Cities across the country are laying off tens of thousands of workers, as are the contract workers along with them.

Gas prices are rising, along with interest rates.

Anyone who thinks the market is anything other than a bear trap are not very savvy. Expect the spring of the trap in early fall.

I am sure Obama will have answers to your concerns. More unemployed people - extend unemployment benefits, and other government programs

States having problems paying their bills - bailout bills to help them out

High gas prices - well if you took the bus or drove a smaller car you would not feel the pinch so badly. People need to change their lifestyles in time of national crisis

Eh, rate are going up. Rates for 30 yr mortages went up about .75% in the last month

Perhaps it has something to do with insane deficit spending

Oh Dems have plans for that as well LN. The amnesty bill will be brought up again, and Dems are ready to pass it this time

Unless talk radio, and the "loud people" step up and stop it again

The $4 trillion hasn't been spent yet. That's the total cost not the amount already spent.

I will add that the gov. added 70,000 jobs in May for the census. They don't mention that when they announce that the job loses are lower in May now do they??????

Of course those jobs are over now. I have to wonder what they unemployment rate will be in June without the added gov. jobs and the loses from the auto makers.

The media has said the unemployment rate will reach 10% by the end of the year. Well folks, if those gas prices keep climbing I think we'll see a lot higher than 10%.

I heard a month ago that when you factor out the BS the real rate was already 10% +..I know it's 10% here in Ga.

I've heard the same thing, seems it's closer to 15% if the people working part-time are factored in.

Also, the liberal media was all over Pres bush eveytime gas prices went up. If they went up 5 cents in a week, it was one of the lead stories, and was somewhere on the front page

Has anyone seen any stories going after Obama over the spike in gas prices. Where I live, gas is up around 40 cents a gallon to $2.50/gal

Will Obama, Reid, and Pelosi take the blame like Pres Bush and Republicans did?

Somehow I suspect not a word until Obama blames the "evil" oil companies and of ciourse, Pres Bush

I donno about part-time..I think it's more those that have just given up..they are unemployed but not counted..And yes I think 15% was the national figure I heard too.

Ed Asner on PBS: Why Excrete Money in Iraq When You Can Waste It Here at Home?
By Tim Graham
June 7, 2009 - 00:48 ET

This interview is a little old, but worth sharing. Socialist actor Ed Asner appeared on PBS’s Tavis Smiley show on May 21 to promote his new Pixar film "Up." Asner typically kvetched about the wasteful disaster of Iraq and blundered into an odd quote when he lamented "The crime is you can convince all those Congressional people and the people through the media to piss away all that money overseas and it becomes socialism to convince them to piss away the money here at home."

That is how some on the left excuse Obama for outspending Pres Bush - they say he is spendng it on the "right things" and he is spending the moeny in America

Did the graph include all the jobs created at the US Mint by keeping the presses running 24/7?

It's working? Must be working for all those Arabs Obama promised taxpayer dollars to. I'm not seeing anything working here.

aw, it's all going swimmingly. Did you hear that Obama really said, “Paying for what you spend is basic common sense,” said the president in the East Room standing alongside congressional Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.. “Perhaps that's why, here in Washington, it has been so elusive. The ‘pay as you go rule’ is very simple. Congress can only spend a dollar if it saves a dollar elsewhere.”

An example of how it's all working out for 'us':

Pay as you go is obamanomics for tax increases. Obama and Pelosi should have called it "You pay as I go"
