WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Conservative Christians, a key base for the Republican Party, said on Saturday they were targeting 16 Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, in the 2010 congressional elections.

Four other Democratic senators and 11 U.S. representatives were on the list, which was released at a summit in Washington of conservative "values voters" who are rallying against President Barack Obama's agenda.

The mid-term elections will be the first national test for Obama, who has seen his approval ratings fall in recent months as he and his ruling Democratic Party attempted to push through a sweeping overhaul of the healthcare sector.

"We think we have a shot at taking back some seats," said Connie Mackey, president of FRC Action, the legislative or political arm of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian lobby group which organized the summit.

Activists within the "Religious Right," an informal network of evangelical Protestants, Catholics and Mormons, hope to sway voters next year through voter education, advertising, campaign contributions and endorsements of candidates.

The release of the hit list -- it also included Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut -- was one of the opening shots in a Republican effort to pare some of the huge gains made by Democrats in the 2006 and 2008 elections.

Speakers at the two-day summit attacked the Obama agenda, particularly healthcare reform, regarded as his top domestic priority.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Mormon who lost the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and is seen as a leading contender for the party's nomination in 2012, stuck to a common theme:

"The right answer for healthcare is not more government, it's less government," he said to an estimated 2,000 activists from around the country who attended the summit.

Much of the conservative opposition to Obama's healthcare drive -- it spurred angry protests at town hall meetings last month -- has been driven by conservative Christians who claim that it will all lead to federal funding for abortion.

You have to realize that they're neither "conservative" nor "Christian". They are authoritarian demagogues who use the mantle of Christianity to conceal their authoritarian/fascist tendencies.

Do you feel the same way when Blacks, Hispanics, Liberals, democrats, or any other special interest group decides to take on specific gov't people or businesses???

I love how because they are classified as "conservative Christians" they are somehow LESS important than ohh say a group sponsered by Al sharpton or Jessy Jackson. Where is your faux outrage at those two muck rakers and opportunist????

Give it a rest bully you sound like a broken record. You have received EVERYTHING you wanted in the last couple of elections (a democratic house and senate, and a fascist president) So what is YOUR bitch you and your ilk were going after any and all conservative just 2 years ago. Now that the country is doing SOOOOOO much better with the dems in power *sarcasm off* we will see how things progress in the next couple of elections....

Ohhh by the way STOP with the BLAIMING of Bush he is out of office last i checked, however if your still blaiming him maybe you should also give him some credit for the mess clinton left him when he took office or is it only conservatives fault and NEVER a liberals fault????:poke:

Looks like the thought police are out!

Do you honestly believe there are no Christian conservatives in this country anymore? Or do you believe they should all just keep their mouths shut and not vote?

No, there are rather more of them than one would expect. But most of them don't seem to understand the religion they claim adherence to. And no, they don't need to "keep their mouths shut". They do, however, need to learn the rules of civil discourse. And after watching their antics this weekend at the "Values Voters Conference", I am left with the nagging question of just how many of them have, at some point in their lives, managed to injure themselves whist eating pudding with a rubber spoon.

Of course the conservative messiah, Rush Limbaugh DID utter these immortal words...

<blockquote>I'm tired of these Democrats acting like they won the election. Somebody needs to stand up and say, "<b>When you win the election, you pick the nominees. <i>Until then, shut up! Just shut up! Just go away!</i></b> Bury yourselves in your rat holes and don't come out until you win an election. When you win an election, you can put all these socialist wackos, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer, all over the court, but <b>until then, SHUT UP!</b> - Limbaugh, 2005</blockquote>

LOL, I see, so conservative Christians "don't seem to understand" their own religion. Of course a liberal with an elitist attitude like you would think like this. Where should they learn the "rules of civil discourse"? Maybe from the rabid liberals of the last 8 years? What exactly were their "antics" at some confrence? They dare point out which politicians are attacking Christian values? Do Christians not have a right to vote against those that hate them?

Maybe when Democrats stop attacking Christians, stop pushing agendas like full abortion rights, then they will no longer "target" democrats in elections. I'm not going to hold my breath for that day though.

As for Rush's quote, I have no idea what that has to do with Christians voting the way they want.

Bully, you've all false flagged the fascist and racist labels on all conservatives. Truth-be-told, it's become obvious the largest faction of both are on your side of the divide, which is why they reach for those cards so often.
