Obama wins Nobel Prize? Fow what? What did he do in the 2 weeks he was in office to earn it? What did he do to get the nomination?

President Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Stunning choice made Obama the third sitting president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the nomination deadline

President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," the committee said.

What worthy achievement? According to news reports Obama "reached out" to Muslims

Obama wants world peace

What lame ass reasons to give this boob the Nobel Prize

In all reality, Obama's teleprompter whould have been given the award

It proves what I have always said about liberal and their liberalism

It is not their accomp, ishments that matter - only their good intentions

Libs never want to be held accountable for their failure - and Obama is a perfect example

No, Obama did not fail. it is the fault of others. His intentions are great but he he is not the reason his policies are not working. NO it is Bush's fault, the racists in America are attacking, the Republican minority, talk radio, Fox News, and on and on

NO matter how big a failure Oabma turns out to be, he will still be held in high esteem in the eyes of liberals - much like Jimmy "Peanut" Carter

Who was the worst President in my lifetime - until Obama was sworn in and we got Carter's second term

You have hinted at the crux of the problem; Libs do not believe in personal responsibility. The Democratic party platform is based on victimhood; if there were no victims there would be no Democratic party. It is not in their best interest to resolve ANY issue because it is only through the victims of those issues (most of them GREATLY exagerated by the politicians ....ESPECIALLY dems) that they can stay in power. Of course, corrupt organizations like ACORN and unions help!

Hell no they do not believe in personal responsibility. Dems and libs live to keep the wars between the classes going. Old VS young; black VS white; employer VS employee; male VS female; and rich VS poor

In every case someone is a vicitm and the ONLY way to solve the 'problem" is to elect Dems who can pass some law or regulation

Of course that law or regulation will NOT solve the "problem" but it does accomplish what Dems sought to do in the first place. Secure more power for their party while keeping some segements of the population dependent on them

NO\ow we do have to give Obama credit

Obama has a remarkable list of "accomplishments" in only 8 months CSM

1. Offended the Queen of England

2. Bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia

3. Praised the Marxist Daniel Ortega

4. Kissed Hugo Chavez on the cheek

13. Accepted without public comment the fact that five of his cabinet members cheated on their taxes and two other appointees withdrew after they couldn’t take the heat.

14. Appointed a Homeland Security Chief who quickly identified as “dangers to the nation” groups including veterans of the military, and opponents to abortion on demand, and who ordered that the word “terrorism” no longer be used but instead referred to such acts as “man made disasters.”

15. Circled the globe so he could openly apologize for America ’s shortcomings and sins.

16. Told Mexicans the violence in their country was mostly caused by illegal guns from the U.S.

17. Politicized the census by moving it into the White House from its Department of Commerce origins and announced ACORN [the organization under massive scrutiny amid allegations of election fraud] would manage the process.

19. Salutes as heroes three Navy SEALS who took down three terrorists who threatened one American life and the next day announces members of the Bush administration will likely stand trial for torturing a terrorist who had played a part in killing 3000 Americans by pouring water over his face.

20. On his watch, Air Force One flew over New York City for a photo op without notifying local authorities, causing widespread panic.

21. Took over the American Automobile industry and handed over 50% off to the unions [because he said he owed them] and appointed a czar with no experience of the automotive industry.

22. Continued his drive for abs olute gun control activities, thumbing his nose at the 2nd Amendment.

23. Offered travel and living subsidies in the U.S. to Hamas activists displaced from the Gaza Strip.

24. Got more airtime [TV] than Oprah Winfrey and was often out of Washington instead of tending to the real business of State.

25. Announced the closure of enemy combatants detention center in Guantanamo Bay , Cuba but failed to address the issue of ‘what’ to do with the 200+ prisoners currently held there. Rumors persist that they’ll be housed on U.S. soil, often parroted by the Attorney General.

26. Insists that a legally removed dictator in Honduras be reinstated.

27. Sent condolences to the family of Michael Jackson but not to the survivors of Marine Colonel Ed McMahon or Farrah Fawcett.

The Nobel Prize committee is about as useless as the UN.

This award is about as honorable as being awarded a Silver Star for flying over to Iraq for a day visit. But then you know that. All it has done (along with all the other awards for less then noble efforts) is devalue the award for those who truly deserved it.

Cmon, the whole frikking thing was factually inaccurate. Obama took office TWO WEEKS before the nominations closed. He had ZERO impact in those two weeks...nada...none. We can debate what he has done SINCE then but to say he had an impact in the TWO WEEKS prior to the closing of nominations is pure, unadulterated bullshit. He was a junior senator and presedential CANDIDATE. His foreign policy hadn't even gotten out of draft form yet.

I suppose the committee believed his campaign promises and that was justification enough but to me, something smells rotten in Denmark!

When Jimmie Carter won it that was a low. When Yassar Arafat won it, that was arguably a new low, and now for selling out his country, for apologizing to our enemies, for obstructing our interests, the Nobel Price Committee has hit rock bottom.

The Nobel committee's decision was motivated by Obama's initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism.

Obama won Peace Prize -- but for what?

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Last Updated: 9:39 AM, October 9, 2009

Posted: 8:16 AM, October 9, 2009

WASHINGTON — The awarding of the Nobel Peace Price to President Barack Obama landed with a shock on darkened, still-asleep Washington. He won! For what?

For one of America’s youngest presidents, in office less than nine months — and only for 12 days before the Nobel nomination deadline last February — it was an enormous honor.

The prize seems to be more for Obama’s promise than for his performance. Work on the president’s ambitious agenda, both at home and abroad, is barely underway, much less finished. He has no standout moment of victory that would seem to warrant a verdict as sweeping as that issued by the Nobel committee.

And what about peace? Obama is running two wars in the Muslim world — in Iraq and Afghanistan — and can’t get a climate change bill through his own Congress.

His scorecard for the year is largely an “incomplete,” if he’s being graded.

He banned torture and other extreme interrogation techniques for terrorists. But he also promised to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a source of much distaste for the U.S. around the world, a difficult task that now seems headed to miss his own January 2010 deadline.

He said he would end the Iraq war. But he has been slow to bring the troops home and the real end of the U.S. military presence there won’t come until at least 2012, and that’s only if both the U.S. and Iraq stick to their current agreement about American troop withdrawals.

He has pushed for new efforts to make peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. But he’s received little cooperation from the two sides.

He said he wants a nuclear-free world. But it’s one thing to telegraph the desire, in a speech in Prague in April, and quite another to unite other nations and U.S. lawmakers behind the web of treaties and agreements needed to make that reality.

He has said that battling climate change is a priority. But the U.S. seems likely to head into crucial international negotiations set for Copenhagen in December with legislation still stalled in Congress.

And what about Obama’s global prestige? It seemed to take a big hit last week when he jetted across the Atlantic to lobby for Chicago to get the 2016 Olympics — and was rejected with a last-place finish.

Perhaps for the Nobel committee, merely altering the tone out of Washington toward the rest of the world is enough. Obama got much attention for his speech from Cairo reaching out a U.S. hand to the world’s Muslims. His remarks at the U.N. General Assembly last month set down new markers for the way the U.S. works with the world.

But still ... ?

Obama aides seemed as surprised at the news as everyone else, not even aware he had been nominated along with a record 204 others. Awoken by press secretary Robert Gibbs about an hour after the vote was announced, the White House says the president responded that he was humbled to be only the third sitting U.S. president to win.

The award could be as much about issuing a slap at Obama’s predecessor, former President George W. Bush, as about lauding Obama. Bush was reviled by the world for his cowboy diplomacy, Iraq war and snubbing of European priorities like global warming. Remember that the Nobel prize has a long history of being awarded more for the committee’s aspirations than for others’ accomplishments — for Mideast peace or a better South Africa, for instance.

In those cases, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

Here is your simple answer...THE WHOLE THING. I don't care what the committee wrote. It is clear to me that Obama has done NOTHING that merits such an award other than to state his good intentions. I will continue to be convinced that the award was meritless and that Nobel Prize has become a sham.

You may not agree but that is my stance. I've played this silly semantics game with you before and it is a waste of time for both of us. The words may be grammatically correct and no doubt used with the proper definitions but the entire thing is clearly an attempt to make folks believe something that is not true. I know you hold the belief that lies and hypocricy are just fine as long as it supports your position (because you told me so yourself) but I do not. The word "integrity" means something to me if not to you.

This thread will soon be relegated to the Steel Cage anyway so any further discussion is pointless.

your opinion is your opinion.... the fact that you cannot point to anything factually inaccurate and continue to repeat your opinion over and over instead is telling. You may not agree with the importance that the committee placed on the facts that they listed, but they were hardly FALSE.

This will also give him "momentum" to force his socialist agenda upon America. Thats what the international community really wants to see.

The committee just as well could have said "We are awarding the Peace prize to Obama because the earth revolves around the sun and it snows in some places on the Earth in the winter." Factually correct (as MM points out). Hardly justification for awarding the peace prize but hey, it's their decision.

If Obama accepts the cash award he should be impeached for taking bribes...

DNC: GOP Has Thrown In With 'Terrorists -- Taliban and Hamas' in Opposing Obama's Nobel
By Tim Graham (Bio | Archive)
October 9, 2009 - 11:07 ET

While two reporters -- Washington Post White House reporter Michael Fletcher and Wall Street Journal Executive Washington Editor Gerald Seib -- criticized RNC Chairman Michael Steele this morning on NPR's Diane Rehm show for issuing a statement against Obama after the Nobel Peace Prize win, will reporters forward and criticize this, from the CNN Political Ticker?

A Democratic National Committee spokesman said Friday the GOP has "thrown in its lot with the terrorists" in criticizing the president's Nobel Peace Prize award.

“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists – the Taliban and Hamas this morning – in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize," DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse said in a statement.

"Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize – an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride – unless of course you are the Republican Party," the statement also said. "The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It's no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it's an embarrassing label to claim.”

But CNN also reports that some in Hamas are congratulating Obama, since he is no Bush:

Hamas official Ahmed Yousef also congratulated Obama, "though it is early for him to be awarded this prize."

"He reached out to the Muslim world in his Cairo speech and said many of the right things" and said, "this is a man who thinks of achieving world peace."

He said he believes Obama represents a "new era in American politics," but thinks "the president has done nothing to push forward peace between Israeli and Palestinians" even though the "intention is there...it is an uphill battle with the Jewish lobby and Congress."

"We know he is somebody different from past leaders who supported Israel economically and militarily," Yousef said.

NBC's Lauer: Not to Be Rude, But Obama Hasn't Done Anything
By Rich Noyes (Bio | Archive)
October 9, 2009 - 10:37 ET

Even Barack Obama’s fan club on NBC’s Today were stunned at the President’s winning of the Nobel Peace Prize. Co-host Matt Lauer found it baffling: “We’re less than a year into the first term of this president and there are no -- I'm not trying to be, you know, rude here -- no major foreign policy achievements, to date.”

Meet the Press moderator David Gregory felt the need to point out the “left-leaning” impulse of the Europeans who christened Obama as the world’s leading peacemaker for 2009: “This is a lot more about tone than it is substantive accomplishment. In many ways, this is a European body who is more left-leaning, certainly, and opposed to the administration of George W. Bush.”

Lauer followed up: “So, what you're saying in some ways and, again, not to be rude here or sarcastic, that in some ways he wins this award for not being George W. Bush?”

Allow me to set the record straight Virgil

How to Win the Nobel Peace Prize In 12 Days

Let’s take a look at the president’s first 12 days in the White House according to his public schedule to see what he did to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize.

January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.

January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information requests. Held an “open house” party at the White House.

January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (how’s that working out?)

January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.

January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.

January 25: Skipped church.

January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton. Attended Geithner's swearing in ceremony.

January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.

January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary in the afternoon.

January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.

January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.

January 31: Took the day off.

February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.

I'd be embarrassed if a Republican won this award under the same circumstances. People aren't stupid and half the world is questioning this decision, not just the US. Even ardent supporters of Obama are stating that he hasn't had time yet to earn this award, that what he done thus far is laid the groundwork for quite a few things but has actually accomplished ZILCH. It's not only an embarrassment to the whole peace prize process, but to every person who won one before who actually EARNED it. To give the award to someone who has yet to accomplish a single thing thus far towards any peace is actually comical. Words shouldn't win you these awards, actions should, and quite simple, which NO ONE can dispute, he hasn't accomplished jack shit on this front to date.

The best that can be said about Obama winning this award under these circumstances is this, the Nobel committee is making a political statement. We didn't like the last guy. And this is not what the Nobel is for. The politicizing of the Nobel Prize does nothing but detract from the significance of the award. The committee's decision to honor Al Gore in 2007 rather than Irene Sendler was the beginning of the end to the award's meaning and relevance, today's announcement simply completes the journey. For anyone to defend the President's winning this award for any reason other than his accomplishments is asinine. But, because there are no accomplishments worthy of a Nobel under Obama's belt, you have no choice. Much like the Nobel committee, you do nothing but demean the prize and it's original intent.

According to Alfred Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

I'm not sure that the speeches our President has given over the last nine months are worthy of the award, but I suppose that they technically qualify him to be in the running. Except for one thing: He was nominated during his first two weeks in office, no one had any way of knowing what he would be saying over the coming months!

Even President Obama says he is undeserving of the award. Sadly, however, his hubris will not allow him to do the right thing and refuse the award. That in and of itself is a gross embarrassment.

Is it a great honor to recieve the Nobel Peace Prize? It used to be. When the recipient had actually accomplished something.

Nowadays, I'm not so sure.

Anyone who believes that our President has done anything worthy of this once great honor, well, you're sadly mistaken.

In the end, all I can say is, congratulations Mr. President. Now maybe you can make a decision about your war in Afghanistan.

Obama's Nobel Is Premature, Historians and Political Scientists Say
The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama is an "embarrassment" to the process, a presidential historian told FOXNews.com.

Giving President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize is a "premature canonization" and an "embarrassment" to the process of designating a laureate, a presidential historian says.

"The jury is still out as to what his presidency is going to add up to," Fred Greenstein, author and professor of politics emeritus at Princeton University, told FOXNews.com.

"It's more of an embarrassment to the Nobel process."

President Obama said Friday he was "most surprised and deeply humbled" to win the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, adding that he accepts the honor as "a call to action to confront the common challenges of the 21st century."

In a brief statement in the White House Rose Garden on Friday, the president said he does not "view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments," but rather as a recognition of goals he has set for the United States and the world.

"I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize," he said.

Obama will go to Oslo in December to accept the honor, which includes a $1.4 million award, Norway's prime minister said.

Greenstein said Obama is unlikely to gain any political advantage from the award, and it is unlikely to lead to any major policy changes.

Only two other sitting presidents, Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson in 1919, have been awarded the prestigious Peace Prize. Roosevelt was honored largely for brokering an agreement between Russia and China, and Wilson took the award for his role in ending World War I and creating the League of Nations.

It's far too early to compare Obama to either of his predecessors, said Allan Lichtman, professor of history at American University.

"They're not comparable," Lichtman said. "[Roosevelt and Wilson] were six or seven years into two-term presidencies, and Obama has not completed a single year of his presidency, so it makes very little sense."

Obama possesses a great deal of "promise," but the jury is still out, Lichtman said.

"It remains to be seen what his foreign policy legacy will be," he said. "It is premature. This was to encourage rather than to recognize an accomplished fact."

The award might even become a "political headache" for Obama, Lichtman said.

"On the one hand, his liberal base will be pushing him to live up to this," he said. "And his Republican critics will say a bunch of Scandinavians socialists have given this award to another socialist. You'll hear quite a bit of criticism from the right."

Stephen Wayne, professor of American government at Georgetown University, praised Obama's "good instincts" and strong belief in diplomacy, but said he failed to see accomplishments that merited the prize.

"It does seem to me, at this point, that's its premature," Wayne said. "When I first saw it, I thought it was a joke. Obama may have been the first to get it for his rhetoric and his orientation."

Wayne said he was "startled" to learn Obama had been nominated for the award less than two weeks into his presidency.

"What had he done by February? He had been the first African-American elected president and provided sawing rhetoric," Wayne said. "In one sense, Obama has always been more popular in Europe than in the United States. That popularity is based in part on the contrast he provides to former President George W. Bush, who was not popular in Europe. I am very favorable toward President Obama, but this prize is a surprise to me."

So, two weeks of not having his head up his ass on foreign policy is no the quality point for the nobel prize? christ, I should have it then, I mean, seriously, I've haven't pissed off a single country in the whole world in 30 years. Is this really on the same level of Martin Luther King, Jr.?

And clearly, they gave him the award for work extending past the first eleven days.

Clearly that is the issue...they awarded the prize on hope and a promise rather than real accomplishment but, hey, if that is what the Nobel Prize is going to be based on then so be it.

I would expect the nominee's list to be HUGE in the future given that to be the basis for future awards.

I wouldnt have cared. At least then the award would have meant something. How can you award someone who has done absolutely nothing a peace prize? it's ridiculous. It mocks the entire concept of the prize. I mean let them man do something before you give him an award! Is that too much to ask?

"for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"

THAT is what he did.

I personally think that his efforts at outreach to the muslim world with his historic speech in Cairo masy very well change the course of history... I think that his efforts to reach out to Iran have already brought them back to the table and have gotten them to agree to have UN inspectors return. You are seriously joking right? He gave a speech that changed a course in history?

When exactly were the Iranians away from the table? They've been more than willing to talk to anyone simply because the longer they talk the more time they have to get their weapon. They were at the table during the Bush administration as well. Obama has done nothing to change that.

Abandoning Poland and Eastern Europe is helping us make peace in the world? I am sure they have nothing but good will toward us now.

You are right about one thing. He has singlehandedly changed world opinion about us. He is one of the only Presidents I've ever seen who can insult the British, act so incompetantly that the French government is actively mocking us, abandon our eastern European allies, threaten to bomb allies, insult Brazil, and actively support despotism in central america and make it seem to his supporters that we are suddenly more respected in the world. With friends like Ahmadinejad, who needs enemies?

This world is much safer by allowing people promising genocide to get a nuclear bomb and letting our soldiers die in Aghanistan in order to make a failed attempt to secure the Olympics in order to enrich political cronies. That makes us look absolutely fantastic in the world.

Based on my past experience with you, however, I will not hold my breath waiting for either of those responses.

Tell me: when were UN inspectors previously allowed into Iran?

agreeing to not deploy a technologically untested and unreliable system has indeed brought Russia around to a place where they are now adding their voice towards tough sanctions against Iran which they had previously refused to do...and that, in turn, has caused Iran to agree to admit UN inspectors back into their country.

You fool yourself if you don't acknowledge that Obama has singlehandedly boosted American esteem throughout the world. But again...based upon my past experience with you, watching you willfully fool yourself is nothing new.

I personally think that his efforts at outreach to the muslim world with his historic speech in Cairo masy very well change the course of history...

Wow, that was really difficult. Are you saying that you don't think that now?

Oh, and should you really be criticizing others for a lack of language skills?

Seriously, I know you seem to think this is some sort of partisan issue even though most Americans think that he hasnt done anything to earn this award. Heaven forbid, someone be concerned for the actual integrity of the award. As I've stated before, if I was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with the same achievements as the President, I wouldnt refuse to accept the award. It's the only honorable thing to do when other people more deserving should have won.

If you think wanting people to actually accomplish goals towards the cause of peace and being disgusted by the corruption and games played by this prize committee is a partisan issue, then I seriously have to question your positions. You are in favor of corruption? You are in favor of dishonesty? you are in favor of recognition for no achievement?

Even President Obama himself said he didnt deserve the award. I dont think he expected it. He doesnt seem to have the decency to turn it down. But it's down right amazing that you have your head so up Obama's behind that you defend what your own leader has conceded.

Why is it any attack on corruption is a partisan issue for you? Outrage at ACORN is partisan. Outrage at the Nobel Prize committee for this travesty is partisan. You defend corruption and you think that is love for your country?

Hear me now, I will do everything in my power to pull down corruption. I will call people out when they are dishonest. I do this not because i hate a certain party. I hate any party or members engaged in corruption. I hate dishonesty. I see the evil men and women people like you blindly support screw people over every single day and I am absolutely sick and tired of it. Im sick and tired of people like you who blindly support or attack people simply because of the letter's next to their name and then pretend everyone else does it too.

And why? Because you want to score points on a message board. Because you feel compelled to pretend to be morally superior instead of actually doing something moral. You think you can just assert things that are completely ridiculous and then when called on it you pretend you didnt say it. Then you resort to personal insults.

You know he doesnt deserve this award. He has admitted he doesnt. What is so difficult about admitting the truth?

Do you know that they have changed the rules for volleyball.........a team no longer has to "earn" the point. They give out points to your team even when the other team screws up. This is typical of what liberals have done to the world. We no longer have to "earn" our accolades......we just have to show up and stand in line and the liberals will make sure you "feel" good about yourself, even if you don't deserve it. We are creating a world where nothing means anything anymore. It used to be that ribbons were given out for first, second and third and my kids were excited when they won and disappointed when they didn't. And when they didn't they knew they needed to work harder and do things differently next time. Now, everyone gets a ribbon......what's the point of even competing if there is no sense of satisfaction in being the best!

This has nothing to do with partisanship.......it has to do with "earning" something rather than being given something by an organization that seeks to gain favor. Obama is more concerned about his image with the international community than he is with satisfying what the majority of Americans want. We don't want an apologist as our president, or someone who takes credit for something he has no right to.

One day, just one day, Id like to see you care more about doing what's right than looking good.

With Virgil and the liberal media all that matters is that Obama "inspires". Actual acomplishments are meaningless and do not matter

You can't change the course of history...it's in the past. His speech may change the course of the future, but it appears that more and more people are catching on to the bullshit disguised in his flowery prose. He's under some grand illusion that he's qualified to lead the world when he hasn't even shown he's capable of running this country.

I never said he would change HISTORY. I said he MIGHT change the COURSE of history. If he causes a quantum change in the way muslims and the rest of the world interact, then, when we look back at that moment from a future perspective, we MIGHT be able to say that the speech changed the course of history. Get it? No oxymoron there... just english above a third grade level which clearly is all you are capable of.

What Price for Obama’s Nobel Prize?

What do the Norwegian Nobel arbiters expect to collect from President Barack Obama? They have just awarded him a peace prize which Obama himself suggests was extended on credit — or so he implied in telling reporters Friday morning that he wasn’t sure he’d done enough to deserve it.

But the Nobel Norwegians express not only their hope that he will play out their fantasies, but their confidence that he is “now the world’s leading spokesman” for their preferred “international policy and attitudes.”

Who are these folks issuing Obama a prize on credit to steer America along their preferred course? The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee of five Norwegians, whose members are appointed by the parliament of Norway. Ever heard of Thorbjorn Jagland? Active for decades in the Socialist International, a collectivist who navigated a long series of embarrassing moments in Norwegian politics to become current Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Jagland now heads the Norwegian Nobel Committee. His fellow members who have just issued this Nobel IOU to a sitting American president are — are we ready for global policy guided by this crowd? – Kaci Kullman Five, Sissel Marie Ronbeck, Inger-Marie Ytterhorn and Agot Valle.

What, more specifically, might they be expecting of Obama? For starters, Norway, along with neighboring Sweden and Denmark, has been banging the drum for America to hand over to the United Nations enormous control over and constraints upon the U.S. economy, in the name of (warming/cooling/take-your-pick) climate change. Thus did Norway’s Nobel committee bestow its favors in 2007 on Al Gore and the UN’s Self-Interested Panel of Politically Corrupted Science — excuse me, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. And this December the UN is convening a big climate conference in Copenhagen, with which the U.N. hopes to “seal” its growth-stunting UN-enriching climate “deal.”...

The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee - four of whom spoke to The Associated Press, said awarding Obama the peace prize could be seen as an early vote of confidence intended to build global support for the policies of his young administration.

They lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation, and praised his pledges to reduce the world stock of nuclear arms, ease U.S. conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen its role in combating climate change.

"Some people say - and I understand it - 'Isn't it premature? Too early?' Well, I'd say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now," Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, told the AP. "It is now that we have the opportunity to respond - all of us."

Jagland said the committee whittled down a record pool of 205 nominations and had "several candidates until the last minute," but it became more obvious that "we couldn't get around these deep changes that are taking place" under Obama. - AP

All I am asking is for the Obama supporters to admit Obama really did nothing to earn this award. He was in office 11 days when the nominations closed.

Like with the economy, Obama has talked a good game but has accomplished ZERO as far as what he promised

Here's what I'm curious about -- all the FAR left left are trying their best to articulate why Obama won the award -- and meanwhile, Obama himself is out there stating that he did not deserve the award. His "call to action" speech only furthers the collective thoughts of many around the world -- that he prematurely received the award, but it might be respected more IF he actually accomplishes any of his lofty goals.

What did he do before his presidency to deserve such an award - nothing.
What did he do before he was nominated in those 12 days? - a speech? LOL
What has he done since being nominated - nothing

He's worked hard, and I'll give him that, but he has yet to actually accomplish anything that can be permanently put on his record. To give the award without accomplishments is ludicrous.

Let's suppose we have troops in Iraq till 2012 which many are stating, and Amercian troops die, and more Iraqi citizens as a result of our continued presence? Maybe Obama increases troops in Afghanistan - and again, American troops die and so do many citizens on the ground as a result of the continued war. What happens if he makes no progress with Iran, and the stalemate continues for the next few years? Many point to his "historic" speech to Muslims, yet I see no difference whatsoever from the Muslim community towards the USA. What if Muslim terror still rears it's ugly face towards American interests abroad over the next several years? What if the battle between Israelis and the Muslim population gets worse?

I think if these issues don't go Obama's way -- both him and the nobel prize committee will look like schmucks. Well, more so than they do today anyway.

and yet a man like Pres Ronald Reagan - a man the left hated - brought down the Soviet Union without firing a shot, ened the Cold War - was not awarded a Nobel Peace Prize

But then again Reagan was a white conservative - those disqualified him off the bat for consideration

Let alone all his actual accomplishments that I thought were needed for the award

Gee MM, looks like you are as giddy over Obama's "win" as Castro is. It is also amusing how the liberal media calls Castro the former "leader" of Cuba and not what he was.

A murderous dictator

Fidel Castro lauds Nobel prize for Obama

HAVANA (Reuters) – Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro lauded the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Barack Obama, saying on Saturday it was "a positive measure" that was more a criticism of past U.S. policies than a recognition of Obama's accomplishments.

Castro said the prize made up for the blow Obama suffered last week when the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2016 Summer Games to Rio de Janeiro after Obama had flown to Copenhagen to pitch for Chicago, his adoptive hometown.

The Nobel Committee announced on Friday that Obama had won the peace price for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

The decision prompted surprise in many quarters and anger from Obama's conservative foes in the United States.

But Castro, who has generally written positively about Obama, was pleased at the decision by the committee.

"I don't always share the positions of that institution but I'm obligated to recognize that in this instance it was, in my judgment, a positive measure," Castro wrote in a column published in state-run media.

"Many will say that he still hasn't earned the right to receive such distinction. We prefer to see in the decision, more than a prize for the president of the United States, a criticism of the genocidal policies that not a few presidents of that country have followed."

Such policies, Castro said, had "brought the world to the crossroads where it finds itself; an exhortation for peace and the search for solutions to assure the survival of the species."

The Nobel prize made up for "the reverse Obama suffered in Copenhagen ... which provoked angry attacks by his adversaries of the extreme right," Castro wrote.

His comments were part of a long piece entitled "The Bell Tolls for the Dollar" in which he said the U.S. dollar was losing its position as the preeminent world currency.

Also, he criticized the United States, as he often does, for not doing more to cut emission of greenhouse gases said to be causing global warming.

not so. If we look back, twenty years from now, and can say that the Obama speech in Cairo marked a point in time where we can trace a change in the way that muslims looked at America and looked at the West, and that change resulted in a more peaceful world, we will most certainly be able to say that Obama's speech changed the course of history.

Now back to the topic at hand

Even a liberal reporter who voted for Obama can't understand why he won the Nobel Prize

President Obama Won What?

"Mom!" my 12-year-old yelled from the kitchen. "President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize!"

I told her she had to be mistaken.

This is ridiculous -- embarrassing, even. I admire President Obama. I like President Obama. I voted for President Obama. But the peace prize? This is supposed to be for doing, not being -- and it's no disrespect to the president to suggest he hasn't done much yet. Certainly not enough to justify this prize.

"Extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples?" "Captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future?" Please. This turns the award into something like pee-wee soccer: Everybody wins for trying.

Scroll down the list of peace prize winners. Jimmy Carter won in 2002 "for his decades [emphasis added] of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts." Last year's winner, Martti Ahtisaari, was cited "for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades [emphasis added], to resolve international conflicts."

Obama gets the award for, what, a good nine months? Or maybe a good two weeks -- the nominations were due Feb. 1. The other two sitting U.S. presidents who won the prize -- Woodrow Wilson in 1919 for his role in founding the League of Nations, Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 for negotiating an end to the Russo-Japanese War -- were in their second terms.

I imagine that Obama, when they woke him up this morning to deliver the news, grasped the bizarreness of it all. In 2006, when he was only a star senator, he mocked his instant celebrity at the Gridiron Club dinner.
I've been very blessed," he said. "Keynote speaker at the Democratic convention. The cover of Newsweek. My book made the bestseller list. I just won a Grammy for reading it on tape. And I've had the chance to speak not once but twice before the Gridiron Club. Really, what else is there to do? Well, I guess, I could pass a law or something."

If the Nobel Committee ran out of worthy candidates, it might have engaged in a bit of recycling. Nothing wrong with a second prize to Aung San Suu Kyi (1991).

And I suspect it did not do the president any favors. Obama's cheerleaders don't need encouragement -- and his critics will only seize on the prize to further lampoon the Obama-as-messiah storyline.

Now what does he do for an encore?

Obama with a award, for what, wrecking the greatest country in the world, Are the 5 judges , are they Terrorist like Obama, or are they Black

Anybody that would award Obama with the Nobel peace prize is a complete Idiot, this man has not accomplished anything other than raise taxes raise the deficit , get our soldiers killed with his lack of action , cause more racial tensions than ever, A Nobel peace prize :laugh2: what a effing joke, he has divided a Country that is at the brink of another civil war, I certainly hope it doesn't go that way but it surely could

Just in case I am planting plenty of watermelons in the yard for bait:laugh2:

and of course when Obama and Eric Holder decided which side they would be on when it came to how the CIA got information from terrorists - that was a huge plus for Oabma to win the Nobel Prize
