Under God was added many years after the pledge was written.

Francis Bellamy (1855 - 1931), a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892.

His original Pledge read as follows: 'I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.' He considered placing the word, 'equality,' in his Pledge, but knew that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans. [ * 'to' added in October, 1892. ]

In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, 'under God,' to the Pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer. http://history.vineyard.net/pledge.htm

I'll drink a Pepsi tomorrow in honor of this return to the original pledge of allegiance to the flag. Cheers! Thanks for posting.

Because if "under God" isn't written on a can of Pepsi, the next thing you know, they will try to take away Christmas.

Yup. Fell for it hook, line and sinker. (Sorry.) But I don't worry, I have people to point out my mistakes. :salute:

I have a case of Pepsi in my fridge right now. I love a tall glass full of iced down Pepsi. However, had it been true, I'd have not bought anymore.

In God we Trust on money, has absolutely nothing to do with "under God" in the pledge of allegiance.

Please write posts that at least make sense ;)

Under god was added many years later as I have posted at the beginning of the thread.

What is the history of in god we trust? Do you know?

"The Congress passed the Act of April 22, 1864. This legislation changed the composition of the one-cent coin and authorized the minting of the two-cent coin. The Mint Director was directed to develop the designs for these coins for final approval of the Secretary. IN GOD WE TRUST first appeared on the 1864 two-cent coin."

Things do not have to be accomplished simultaneously to be related. The mentioning of God in the Pleldge is easily seen as an outgrowth of the emphasis our Founding Fathers and subsequent generations (such as those of the Civil War era) gave to God's place in our nation. The more difficult thing to do would be to prove a total disconnect between the two inclusions.

A good question to ask would be, would god want his name plastered on and therefore represented by money.

i would say yes or it would not be so...or there is no god in which case it does not matter....

LiberalNation

It would not be so just because god doesn't want it. He gives his people free will to do what they see fit even if it goes against Gods own feeling on the subject. Of course Gods views and feeling are subjective but anyway. Assuming what's in the bible would God want to be represented on money.

Jesus didn't like the whole moeny idea it seams to me. Talking about how hard it is for the rich to get into heaven. Smashing up the market because secular money exchanging and trading was going on.

Maybe that you expect people to give you a certain amount of respect, but you don't offer them the respect of taking the time to type something that's legible, and easy to read?

Oh wait.. I'm not speaking for him; I'm speaking for me.
