SALT LAKE COUNTY -- Residents and businesses in unincorporated Salt Lake County soon will see a new bill in the mail. Starting Jan. 1, the new Unified Police Department will replace the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department.
Earlier this week, county leaders gave preliminary approval to a fee that would generate close to $12.8 million annually for the new police department. The fee, which the board will vote on after public input in early January, comes after a tough financial year for the county. Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon says sales tax revenue for the county has dropped by 30 percent since 2007. That, plus losses on investment earnings in 2009 resulted in cutting the 2010 law enforcement budget by 6.1 percent.

Proposed public safety monthly fees

Single-family homes, $14.50
Mobile homes, $15.50
Duplexes, $16.50
Apartments, $19.50
Auto dealers, $55
Restaurants, $55
Churches, $73
Bars and taverns, $75
Convenience stores w/gas, $330
Hotels/motels, $600
Grocery stores, $1,821
Super stores, $5,945

The Unified Police Department will cost less than the current sheriff's office. But Corroon says the county still is short funding.
"You'll get a bill like you get your gas or electric bill in the mail. We'd ask citizens in the unincorporated parts of Salt Lake County to recognize that is something they will need to pay," Corroon says.
Even with a downsized budget and looming financial woes, council members say UPD is still going to be less expensive for residents because the money is being re-directed from property taxes already being paid.
Council member Jim Bradley says, "The down side is that a fee system is relatively new and people have a tough time with change and a system like this. But I think over time people will learn to appreciate this much more than just paying a lump sum property tax and not really knowing where it goes."
The new bill or "fee," as it's being called, will cost a single family home owner about $170 a year. An apartment resident will have a slightly higher bill, closer to $230 a year. That's because the fee is not based on property value but how often police are called to an area.
"Apartment complexes would pay a little bit more because there is traditionally more police calls that are required at an apartment building," Corroon explains.
Large businesses such as big-box stores will see some of the largest fees. Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder says, "With this fee coming up, people are going to make the misperception that the Unified Police Department is costing them more. The reality is the services cost less. The reality is the county had a deficit to make up and they're doing it through a law enforcement fee."

Will property tax for that area be reduced? Will landlords reduce rent by $19.50 per month?

So is there a huge problem at Superstores? Almost $70,000 per year!

Are the police called to churches more than restaurants?

If you don't pay the bill will they deny service and not respond to the address?

IN South Carolina I had to have a fire contract, it cost about 80 bucks a year , I was told by the fire dept. that if I didn't pay it they would come out and wet down the house or fields close to the house, so I paid it, after getting the contract and reading it, at the bottom of it it stated, if we don't make it out in time we are not responsible, LOL, very comforting

What they needed was competition. Another fire company or two with lower prices and better service.

"911, for English press 1."
"If your calling about your account press 2"
"If you wish to pay on your account press 3"
"To speak to a representative and you know the extension press the extension number now, or press 0."
"For fire emergency press 4"
"For medical emergency press 5"
"For all other emergencies, stay on the line and a representative will be with you shortly."
"Thank you for calling emergency services."
(music begins playing)

I thought taxes paid for the police force. I don't understand why I have to pay a monthly fee in case I need police protection, can I upgrade my fee for a military protection...he he:cool:

Maybe they can advertise their services on TV. Maybe multiple police departments competing for your business.

:laugh2:, yeah maybe they can tape it like the reality show cops, and make it a real competition....each week we give them a harder crime to deal with...

This is the result of corrupt, wasteful and inefficient government bureaucracy when it grows too massive and expensive.

The larger government becomes, the more corrupt, wasteful, inefficient and bureaucratic it becomes as is the case here.

The residents must remove those in charge and elect new people and start over again from scratch or pack-up and move.

I'd pack up and move if I could....but I don't know any good place to move to anymore.

I have noticed that people are becoming more aware of bad government and are more easily spurred into action these days.

This sort of thing is right up the Tea Party movements ally...I'm sure there's an active group in Salt Lake City looking for a good fight.

I suppose a third option might be to do nothing and accept this injustice.

Ohio's been getting "progressively worse". Pun intended. Through the year the repubs have done nothing as the libs slowly tax us to death.

Wonder if that department will hire strong arms to go around to the businesses and "collect".

Now I suppose all the counties around the country are going to impose a tax/fee such as this at some point. Heaven forbid they let it slide because we are all over taxed as it is..... I thought taxes paid for cops and firemen.... It seems they've discovered a way around that little bit of info.....Go figure..:lame2:.

If Gov'ts were subject to performance audits, AND...and this is the key...And stupid people weren't allowed to vote them into office, our entire nation would benefit. Stupid people are those who WANT government to take care of them out of their own laziness (see: http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/news-opinion/2009/10/obama-money-rush-limbaugh-moves-the-google-needle.html )
