The Sundance Film Festival starts today, my aunt flew in last night, and others will fly this week. My mom and her entourage will attend as many shows they can squeeze in over the next two weeks. Does your state have these Film Festivals and have you attended?

PARK CITY -- The Sundance Film Festival is in full swing, with screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and at the Sundance Resort.

"Get Low"
Friday night's Salt Lake City premier is a film titled "Get Low." (http://sundance.bside.com/2010/films/getlow_sundance2010) It stars Robert Duvall, Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek -- all award-winning actors. "Get Low" tells the story of a man who lives as a hermit for nearly 40 years. When he finds out that an old friend has died, he decides to hold a "funeral party" and invites people in town.

His aim is to find out what they have been saying about him.

Robert Duvall says the decision to be part of this independent film was easy.
"[It's a] very fresh script; very difficult to find original scripts and original ideas," Duvall said. "Very good writing."
Sissy Spacek says her favorite films are independent productions, and she loves the feel of the festival.

"It's always relaxed, and you put on your snow boots and your jeans and your coat, and you just walk up and down Main Street all day, and it's fabulous," Spacek said.

Some stars have been to the festival a number of times; but for others, this is their first.

"I used to spend a lot of time in Salt Lake with the Salt Lake Trappers, but the festival? I don't know. This is the first thing I've done," actor Bill Murray said.

Talk about a Cinderella story, the film's director started out in college shooting wedding videos.
"I just got here, so it's a veritable whirlwind," director Aaron Schneider said. "But it's my first Sundance, and there's a great history, a rich history."

My sister went once. She didn't care for it much because the stars and their entourages take up too much space in the screenings.
She prefers the Toronto film Festival and the South by Southwest Film Festival. The latter is in mid-march.

Yeah I am sort of a recluse so when I did go we always went to the late shows I'm not much into crowds. The last documentary I saw was about this village in asia all the adults had contracted aids and the doc was filmed over the course of a year. The focus was on a 9 yr old girl who took care of her mom and dad and little brother and little sister. During the year the mom got sicker and sicker and finally the girl put her mom in a wheelbarrow and the mom died and then she buried her. They lived in a shack on dirt floors and it then before the documentary ended they informed the viewers the dad was becoming ill too after the mom died. so the 9yr old was going to have to take care of him and the siblings. The 9yr old cried over her moms grave and I just couldnt take it, I cried too and then I didnt go back to sundance. Yeah I cried so what !

In these parts we tend to ignore those liberal uppity film bastards!

They can have their wine an cheese an slap/stab each other on/in the back all they want. We'll have beer an Hot wings watch Earl re-runs or a good fishin show, thank you very much.

Ya see, here we know the difference between "impotent" and "important". :laugh2:

Yeah I know what you mean, I don't fit into that either but my mom has always been artsy fartsy so I attended sundance a few times to hang with her, but it is really not my thing either.

I had my art theater/indie film/foreign film phase when I was in my mid-20's in NYC. Looking back, everyone seemed so smug and self-congratulatory. :)
