A Kia something or other. I brought my Expedition to the dealer today for a new set of tires and the mechanic broke one of the tire pressure sensor bands that is strapped to the inside of the rims. The parts department didn't have a replacement, and neither did any dealers within driving distance, so they have to Fed-Ex one in from somewhere. In any event they had to give me a car to drive home.

They didn't tell me what kind of car I'd get and I didn't ask because I'm not planning on going anywhere except back to the dealer the next day. So Enterprise shows up at the dealer with a fucking Kia. I look at the car and laugh and the guy tells me that I can upgrade to an Explorer for ten bucks if I want. I told him that it wasn't the ten bucks but the 20 minutes that it would take to do that, shook my head and got in the thing.

I'm not a big guy but this fucker is tiny. Its funny because I'm so cramped side to side but could wear a ten gallon hat inside of it. He tells me it has 1/4 tank of gas so bring it back that way. Its a 30 mile round trip so it should cost me, like, three bucks, right?

I turned the lights on and drove away onto the city street and turned on the radio. Not a bad radio at all.

Then I got on I-40 and got it up to what I thought was my usual speed but everyone was passing me and when I looked at the speedo I was only doing 55, and the posted speed is 65. So I got on the gas, it has decent acceleration, and brought it up to "4 over", or just shy of 70. Now this fucker is buzzing and I can barely hear much of anything except the engine. That explains the decent radio, so I turned it p so I could hear.

Now the tach is telling me 2900 rpm, which is about 1000 more than my vehicle does at the same speed. I looked down at the auto shifter to make sure I wasn't in low, but no, It said "D". Heck back in the 70's I had an Escort and it didn't rev that high either.

When I got home the gas gauge read 1/8 of a tank. I know that the gauges aren't accurate but even so, assuming a 12 gallon tank that's 10mpg. I get 18 on the same trip with my Expedition.

Tell them they should be paying you $10 for the inconvenience caused by their inept repairman!!

If you've ever operated a tire changing machine with 20" wheels and 275/55 series tires you'd appreciate the fact that anyone can make it work at all, never mind damaging a part now and then.

I did tell my service rep that they should have a box of these things in stock and he had already chastised the parts manager for not doing so.
