Director, US Census Bureau says:

This is your official 2010 Census form. We need your help to count everyone in the United States by providing basic information about all the people living in this house or apartment.........Census results are used to decide the number of representatives each state has in the US Congress.

I am only answering question #1 - how many people live here. Other than that they are just trying to collect personal information on each member of the household. Why do they need that info to decide how many people live in this house?

I really love the warning on the envelope.. that we are REQUIRED BY LAW to fill out the census...

after the goings on this week on Capitol Hill, the government telling me to obey the law is like a porn star lecturing me on the virtues of celibacy....

Nancy Pelosi is bending the law like a clown bends balloons into poodles at a kid's birthday party

and why is Barney Frank still a free man? Shouldn't he be in a pound me in the ass prison someplace for his role in this financial crisis we're in?

they need your race to know the racial makeup of the country, that's why they ask. To see if the hispanics have made the majority yet.

I love it! Maybe that'll keep em from the door too, but I doubt it.
I had two visits in 2000 with a threat of a third that never showed..I'll look for that this yr too. I've decided to not even answer the door this time.

Great idea!

My says to tell how many people lived in the house as of April 1, 2010, so I have not mailed my in yet...so I could answer a couple more questions.

As far as I am concerned, it is none of the government's business who lives here, whether they pay rent, what their age and birthdate's are, or what race they are.

To determine how many reps we need for our area, they ONLY need to know how many people live here!

Well, I did end up answering first two questions .... how many people are living here on 4/1/10 and second question .... does anyone else live here part time ..... no.

I did find that the law says a fine of not more than $100 for refusing to complete form and not more than $500 for giving false info.

From Census Bureau website:

Title 13

Sec. 221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers

(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.

(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500. (c) Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body.

That is not what the Director said - it says the info is to decide the number of representatives .... will the number change if there are more/less Hispanics? No, but "race" has been used to determine the bounderies of congressional districts in some cases.

Rearangeing congressional districts by racial demography is used to elect more minorities to government.

Hispanic is not a race, geez does no one get that????????????????

It's an ethnicity just like German or English is an ethnicity, neither specify race.

I filled out the whole form, I don't see a problem with the questions they asked.

Why do they need your name or phone number?

They probably don't NEED that. I however don't have a problem providing it, I also don't have a problem providing my race.

I'm not worried about politicians manipulating that data to change voting districts because of race, this county is something like 97% white.

You're right they don't need it. Fact is they already have access to it. So, the question is WHY are they asking for it? Could they be training you to provide private information when asked with the threat of a penalty if you don't comply?

Where do you draw the privacy line? How invasive will you allow the Government to be? What if in 2020 they ask "How many times a week do you have sex"? Do you use birth control? "What type"?

Did it happen to name the part of the Constitution that authorizes it to ask the questions beyond "How many people live here?"

I didn't think so. Because there isn't any.

An unconstitutional law is null and void. Likewise any law that supports that unconstitutional law.

Well, I dutifully returned mine a week or so ago.

I told them that 3 people lived in this household....then
slashed out all the other questions and wrote around the
margin on the front.."dont bother sending anyone up here,
we are very rural and have dogs"!

Thats all they need to know and thats all theyre getting.
The "rural" and "lot of dogs" is true!

Hubby filled ours out, but I'm scratching out the phone number. As far as I'm concerned, they are on a need to know basis and they don't need to know....

I think this thing is a way of keeping track of the citizens. It says it's to count "every citizen living in the U.S." :laugh2::laugh2: Now that's a good one. They don't even know how to find out how many illegals are living here. Give me a break.... I find it very intrusive and when the gov't says something you'd better peek out the window to see if it's daylight or dark....They can stick it where the sun doesn't shine......

Well I had a visit from the census bureau today. She came to the gate at 6:45 PM just as I was leaving for a dinner engagement. Said that the CB had this address as vacant or had deleted it because they had no info. I said that I had mailed the survey in April. She said she needed to "interview" me because they didn't have the survey. I said it was not my problem that they had misplaced it. She said that it wasn't her problem if the post office lost it, she was just trying to do her job.

Then she restated that the DB must have deleted the info. I said that was not my problem. Then she said well it was obvious it wasn't vacant and that she needed some information. I restated that I had already given ALL the information I was going to give. She said that if she didn't fill out the form and get my signature it would cost her job ... I said "your job is not my concern."

She started escalating the pressure by saying that if I didn't complete the interview they would keep sending people out. I said...I will tell them the same thing I told you .... I have completed the survey .... if they lost it, then bring me another one and I would complete it and hand it over to them. She said it was "past" the time for that survey and now I had to do the interview.

I said ... put on your form that TWO people live in this house .... and then she said .... "male and female?", "what ages are they?"....and I interrupted her and said "it doesn't matter....just put down two people live here".

She showed me the form .... and said I only had to fill out the first page and then put my personal info on the back and sign it so she could turn it in.

I said ... I am going to tell you one more time ..... I HAVE GIVEN YOU ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED FOR THE CENSUS.....the number of people living in this house. She said we need the rest of the information for determining funding ....

I said it shouldn't matter what sex the household members are, what age they are, what ethnicity they are ..... because everyone should be treated the same. She was really getting frustrated so I told her that she was infringing upon my time and should leave. She said they would send someone again ... I said "fine, I'll tell them the same thing I told you ... two people live in this house".

Guess I'll get fined...however, I did keep a copy of the original one so I'll make a copy of that one and hand it over to the next census person and get them to sign that they received it.

I knew I should have mailed it Registered Receipt.....

PS .... I have to tell you that my brother walked out during this conversation and she asked if him if he lived here .... I gave him the "look", turned to her and said .... TWO PEOPLE LIVE IN THIS HOUSE .... YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW WHO THEY ARE IN ORDER TO DETERMINE HOW MANY REPRESENTATIVES CALIFORNIA GETS IN THE HOUSE. She looked startled for a moment ... and then she got in her car and left. I told brother that if anyone, I mean anyone, came out and started asking him questions he should tell them he was the gardener and they had to come back later. He said he thought the census taker and I were going to end up arm wresting and he wanted to watch!!! She was pretty aggressive.....but I was very assertive (or was it the other way around?) :laugh2:

One my friends got the call ..... he said he told them he had completed it and mailed it in ... and they gave him the same story .... "we didn't get it, must have gotten lost".

They asked him things like .... did he own or rent, did he have one or two homes, which one was he living in on April 1st, which one was his wife living in on April 1st, and that they kept asking the same questions over and over but worded a little different .... and he said to them ... "I've already answered that question two questions ago". He said it was very annoying and royally pissed him off.

I asked him why he didn't just hang up ... and he said he was so caught off guard about them saying they didn't get it. And, I have to say, that I read the original survey several times to make sure which question I wanted to answer.

And, he said he was tired, it was so casual and rapid fire that he just answered without thinking and then was pissed off at himself once he started answering. I told him that at any time he could have said .... "you have enough information, I'm done answering questions". Oh well....:slap:

You are only required to tell them how many people live in the house and if they lived there April 1st.

This is used for things like "12 houses down that road are full time residences" and this is factored in to whether or not money is allocated to maintaining or improving the road, Post Office service, stuff like that.

If you have a problem with giving up the info (come on, the IRS already has it), just ask the Census worker what is the minimum info required and they will tell you - they have to.

I know a guy :D that has a new girlfriend that works for the Census and she deals with a lot of people that get downright nasty but she's just doing her job. This intrepid fellow volunteered to drive this chickie around to remote sites and almost got out of the truck (or off the 4-wheeler or snowmachine) to punch a dickhead in the face for verbally abusing a polite girl doing her job and was only asking the required questions - because the other questions certainly weren't going to be answered.

Someone asked about the Hispanic question, I wondered about that too - it's on the radar and it's always asked if possible. Uncle Sam wants to know how many hispanics there are and how fast we are gaining them. Not sure if you guys have been noticing, but the southern border is a pretty big problem and this is one small way to get some kind of number on wtf is happening.

Here's something that most people don't know, (again, told to me by my anonymous buddy who lives nowhere near Alaska), is that under no circumstances are these Census workers EVER to divulge ANY information whatsoever to anyone during the course of their duties. If they wander in and see a full-blown meth lab, they say nothing. This is a golden rule, they are not law enforcement, they just want numbers and if they can, race. Just saw a guy punch his wife in the eye? Didn't happen.

Personally, I didn't have a problem answering the whole thing... I'm not very paranoid and I know the Government already has every bit of info on me, it's just scattered throughout the agencies like IRS, DMV, etc.

Answer the form and you won't be hassled. Fuck around with the census worker trying to do his/her job (and that person is a local person, btw), and you will have another visit. And another visit. Eventually they will get the info needed from a neighbor.

Mailing in the required info will save you talking to a census worker. Unless, of course, they fuck up. In which case, someone will come and talk to you again because someone is completely incompetent in the office and lost your data, and I'm sure that everyone has had this happen to them regardless of your line of work.

I guess what I'm saying is that the government already has this info - so by being difficult and yelling at the poor girl just doing her job to make a buck is silly.

If you have a problem with Big Brother knowing your info, simply ask the census worker "what is the minimum amount of questions I have to answer?" and they will tell you.

There was no "yelling" ... just both of us very firm in what we wanted to get accomplished.

And, yes, the government already knows my family inside and out ... husband is active duty. However, it really irks me that they use the census to collect information that is not "technically" needed ... according to the intent of the law.

To me it is the principal of the thing ...... don't use a defined process (census)to support other political agendas. I have always answered the census survey the same way .... just telling them how many people lived in the house and have never had a worker come to my door. However, it seems to be getting more and more pervasive and I don't see the need for them to know what my age, gender, phone number, ethnicity, email address, etc. are in order to determine how many reps we need in congress.

Understood, KP... just offering my perspective on the whole thing. I really don't think the census is as sinister as many make it out to be.

And nobody thought the stimulus, bailouts and the current oil spill are as sinister as it's actually turning out to be.

Limit states rights, increase federal power.
Control stake in the auto and banking industry.
Next up, control stake in the oil industry.

You really think BO wanted this spill to end a week or two after it occurred?

I thought those were completely sinister from the get-go. You didn't?

I'm not sure who you are or where you're going with this line of thought, how is the Census related in any way with Obama's impressive list of fuckups?

Actually, it's a very sad thing for America and our wild life that this thing is still pouring out oil and ruining the environment. And that's not even taking into consideration all the families that are being held captive in limbo, not knowing what is going to happen.... Damn government red tape. And damn the morons that built that rig and hadn't given a thought as to how to stop a huge oil leak, should one have occured.... Cold hearted, money grubbing, self serving idiots.....And that includes the ones we have in our government....

:laugh2::laugh2: You rock girl.....As far as I'm concerned, they are on a need to know basis and they don't need to know that much info...In fact, all they really have to do is yank their heads out of their backends and contact the IRS to find out the info they are seeking. Since we have to tell so much crap on every damn form we fill out, they should not have a problem locating the data they seek.....

I'm convinced that BO has taken specific actions (more specifically, non-actions) with the intent to prolong the oil spill.

It's the only obvious answer to why you don't: a) get skimmers in the water days after the accident, not months. b) declare a national emergency which would cut through the red tape on getting foreign skimmers in the Gulf. c) have FEMA even acknowledge or even mention the fucking disaster until what, a month afterward?

There is no question in my mind that this disaster is being prolonged by design.

Well, BO is designing his life without a job as president. After this oil mess there's a good chance he won't get elected again.
