Where does tolerance end? Is this type of government really good for anyone?

Militants Ban School Bells in a Town in Somalia
By MOHAMMED IBRAHIM
Published: April 15, 2010
MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Shabab, Somalia’s most powerful Islamist insurgent group, outlawed school bells in a southern town on Thursday after deciding that they conflicted with Islam, residents said.

School principals in the town, Jowhar, about 55 miles north of Mogadishu, the capital, had been summoned to a meeting and informed that the bells could no longer be used because they sounded like church bells, according to one principal.

Can you imagine any organization dictating such "laws" to the population of a small town (say in Vermont)? Other than the citizens of California, I bet there would be instantaneous pushback to such a group.

Hmmm, Muslims sound a whole lot like liberals?

They are militants in Somalia, what do you expect. Likely the most dangerous place in the world.

Just one more example of extremist philosophy run unchecked. Such examples support my belief that extremism (willingly embraced, tolerated or forced upon others) is not a good thing. I agree that Somalia is probably one of the most dangerous places in the world at the moment. However, I also believe that extremism of this sort cannot be tolerated in the name of "political correctness", "diversity" or any other buzzword you care to use.

Completely agree, it's a travesty and is frustrating to know nothing can be done. Somalia is a lost country.

This is some backlash, but it is FAR too few and will result in nothing but some of their own deaths

Excluding Gitmo...Their 'militant rights' have been suspended there.

At least untill Obama finds a way to free them without drawing too much attention.

I REALLY don't want to get into another pointless "all muslims are terrorists" arguments. There are vastly more moderate muslims than extremists. Hog, I would love to take you with me to Qatar next month. I think you'd be so surprised. The cities and towns bustle just like any american cities. People go out and work, do business, shop for groceries, come home to families and eat and sleep. So normal.

While your there you might want to check out the slave market. Maybe you can pick one up cheap. Just another fun vacation in the middle east? Try carrying a bible with you and see how those moderate muslims act toward you. Maybe go peek behind the curtain and see what really goes on behind the scenes.

ME countries have plenty of problems just like any other country. What I enjoy most about ME cities compared to the US cities is that they don't have large drug gang networks or ghettos. I can walk anywhere, at any hour, and feel very safe.

The world is messed up everywhere, don't centralize it all on the ME.

I don't centralize it. I'm just referring to those moderate muslims which you seem to admire so much. There is slave trade in the US too, but not as bad as in the ME. And as for the msnbc site, I refuse to go there, I refuse to watch their channel and wish every day that they would go belly up and off the air. I won't even give them clicker number to tell how many people have gone to their site.

When you go to qater carry a bible with you. And check out the slave auctions, they are much more open about it than the US.
