There is no glory in this story. WTF happened?

By Julie Scelfo
Newsweek
Updated: 1:01 p.m. CT April 25, 2007

April 24, 2007 - Jessica Lynch became a national hero in 2003 after she was dramatically rescued by a team of Special Ops soldiers from an Iraqi hospital where she was believed to be a prisoner of war. Her story was compelling not only because she was a 19-year-old supply-unit clerk who had stumbled into an attack during convoy travel with her unit, but because she was portrayed by military authorities as having valiantly fought back against her attackers even as her unit was surrounded and her comrades were killed and injured. The legend quickly unraveled, however, after Lynch returned to the States, recuperated from her substantial injuries (broken arm and leg bones, damage to her back and kidneys, and a six-inch laceration to her head) and began to speak out about what had really happened. Today, Lynch testified before a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing probing the source of misleading information about Lynch and about the death of Army Ranger Specialist Patrick Tillman in Afghanistan. NEWSWEEK's Julie Scelfo spoke with Lynch, who turns 24 on April 26, about her experiences.

The point is that the government made her out to be a hero... she wasn't...

Do you think it's ok for the government to lie about how people are captured, in her case and how they die, in Pat Tillman's case?

Would you feel the same way about it, if Bill Clinton was still the president?

Those were films from helmit camera's worn by the special ops guys. Not media film. They went in prepared for a fight and were as surprised as everyone that there were no bad guys there. Just cause they didn't take her out in a hail of bullets doesn't mean the operation was any less dangerous. As I recall there was a doctor who made repeated trips up to the American lines to inform them of where she was and that they had to act quick because she was going to be moved. He risked his life to get her rescued.

There were others in her convoy that were taken prisoner when she was. No mention is ever made of them.

How about this, lily? Pvt. Lynch testified that her nurses with white flags waving tried to give her to the American forces but were shot at without question. The Iraqi doctor treating her said a couple years ago that he asked the American commander why they had knocked his doors down and trashed his hospital. The doors were not locked, there were no Iraqi military, other than patients, in the area and there was no opposition whatsoever in the areas of the hospital and for many miles around.

It was a sucker punch for the Iraqis, the recsuers and the American people. The real liars and exaggerators are trying to make it something else.

You're kidding right? You actually believe that a commando unit on a rescue operation are going to just walk in calmly, knock on the door, and ask nicely where she was? How on hell are those troops supposed to know there was no Iraqi military there? For all they knew it could of been a trap and an ambush.

If special forces have a target in a building, they will knock down every door and tell everyone they see to get on the floor and they will keep their guns pointed at them at all times.

You obviously have never been in the military.

She did.

I recall scenes where she was in a military hospital bed, saying something like "All I did during the entire battle, was curl up on my knees on the floor of the vehicle trying to un-jam my gun, and praying."

She was honest and straightforward about it, every chance she got. And she pointed out repeatedly, that she was no hero.

All the current "controversy" is coming from people with carefully short memories trying to pretend something scandalous is going on, somebody lied, we've been maliciously deceived, etc.

And you saps are lapping it up.

Sometimes I fear for my country. But not due to anything the military said or did.

Actually this is a non-story, which I remember:

http://www.americanthinker.com/printpage/?url=http://www.americanthinker.com/2007/04/media_lynch_mob.html

...

This USA Today article from July of 2003 is a hint. It states:

Lynch had been mythicized during the war. An initial report in The Washington Post said Lynch had killed several Iraqis. Later, government officials said she had killed no one.

The fact is it wasn't "later" that the government warned against this fight-to-the-death story line, it was at the time of the initial reporting by the media. And as the USA Today article has correctly identified, The Washington Post did run the story first:

'She Was Fighting to the Death'

Details Emerging of W. Va. Soldier's Capture and Rescue

By Susan Schmidt and Vernon Loeb

Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, April 3, 2003; Page A01

Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

Lynch, a 19-year-old supply clerk, continued firing at the Iraqis even after she sustained multiple gunshot wounds and watched several other soldiers in her unit die around her in fighting March 23, one official said. The ambush took place after a 507th convoy, supporting the advancing 3rd Infantry Division, took a wrong turn near the southern city of Nasiriyah.

"She was fighting to the death," the official said. "She did not want to be taken alive." Lynch was also stabbed when Iraqi forces closed in on her position, the official said, noting that initial intelligence reports indicated that she had been stabbed to death. No official gave any indication yesterday, however, that Lynch's wounds had been life-threatening

Several officials cautioned that the precise sequence of events is still being determined, and that further information will emerge as Lynch is debriefed. Reports thus far are based on battlefield intelligence, they said, which comes from monitored communications and from Iraqi sources in Nasiriyah whose reliability has yet to be assessed. Pentagon officials said they had heard "rumors" of Lynch's heroics but had no confirmation. [emphasis added]

So let's get this straight, The Washington Post single-sourced this story from one official that they couldn't even identify. Ask yourself why they couldn't identify a military official praising a soldier. Is that really a secret? This isn't a whistle blower or Bush Administration insider. It would more than likely be an officer or NCO at the tactical operations center if this person existed.

So why couldn't The Washington Post name the source? The answer is obvious; because the reporters don't even know who it was, or if the incident even occurred. It sounds very much like one person's ruminations in passing, chatting about rumors from unofficial sources. Then The Washington Post ran with the information despite army officials warning them about the veracity of such rumors. And this is the military's fault? Are you kidding me?

Isn't the media supposed to be superior to citizen journalists because of all the editorial safeguards and fact checking? But yet in this reporting, one unidentified source who may indeed be a fiction - a literary device to whom to attribute overheard conversation - trumped the military spokesperson. I challenge The Washington Post to identify this source so that this person can be questioned in the current proceedings.

As i said the creative writers went to work. This has nothing to do with the military and everything to do with the media. Another prime example of media sensationalism.Incorrect. The military lied. Here is an example of what they said in 2003.

Her brother, Greg Lynch, said military officials told the family his sister had "multiple wounds" and that both her legs had been broken as a result of gunshots. Military officials said she was in stable condition.

She was not shot.

During the raid early Wednesday, members of rescue team fought their way into the hospital, found Lynch and fought their way out.

Green-cast night scope video provided by U.S. Central Command showed troops carrying Lynch from the hospital and onto an Black Hawk helicopter

A man taken into custody during the assault led U.S. troops to 11 corpses -- nine in a "grave area" and two in a morgue -- said U.S. Central Command briefing officer Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks in Doha, Qatar.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether any of the bodies were those of soldiers from Lynch's unit, said Central Command spokesman Capt. Frank Thorpe.

Despite the barrage of hostile gunfire entering and leaving Saddam Hospital, there were no coalition casualties among the rescue team, Brooks said.

"It takes a brave bunch of people to risk their own lives to go in and free a hostage," said Gregory Lynch Sr. "We didn't even know she was captured, you know. Last we knew she was just missing in action."

There was no firefight.

That is really sad. Is that the best you've got? Let me explain so you get it:

This isn't about Jessica, this is about a lying DoD, that's why the story is around the world right now. The story isn't about Lynch's rescue, it's about the lies.

Some posts here have blamed the media (the "liberal" media that the right whines about incessantly) for glorifying Lynch and for peddling lies. Hello? Does no-one at the DoD read the newspaper, watch tv or listen to the radio?

"Oh look, the liberal media have printed a story about Lynch being a heroine in Iraq! What shall we do?"

"Let me see that. Oh heavens above! How could they get it so wrong! We must correct this story immediately before it becomes as total embarrassment for the government! Rush to the media people, get this story straightened out now before it does damage in a few years time! We must stop it now!"

You don't care because you live in Bubbleworld I suppose but the rest of the world is looking at your government and shaking its collective head. And I read garbage such as I've read here from posters who put the Party above anything else and who are slavishly repeating right wing talking points without so much as a blush.

As someone said, "the Marines are at war, America is at the mall". But never discount the work being done by the 101st Keyboarders and their derivative the Dvorak Brigade (special keyboard ops). They are fighting the good fight in their own "special" way. :laugh2:
