Comedian Al Franken has reached out to Democratic lawmakers from Minnesota in recent days, seeking advice on a possible Senate run against Republican Sen. Norm Coleman next year.

Franken, a veteran of "Saturday Night Live" and radio show host, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he's called all of the Democrats in the delegation.

"I didn't call Coleman," he deadpanned. "I want to mainly touch base and get advice and counsel on certain issues."

Franken said he's also been reaching out to campaign veterans, pollsters and others to get their advice. While people have been encouraging, Franken said, they've also warned about possible pitfalls.

One in particular, Franken relayed: "It's unknown how people will respond to a comedian running for the Senate. I need to figure out a way to let people know I'm extremely serious about Minnesotans and their lives."

Franken said he hopes to make a decision in the next few weeks. Last year, he moved his radio show from New York City to Minneapolis.

Rep. Collin Peterson, the chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, said that when he picked up the phone, the first thing Franken said was, "I need you to explain countercyclical payments to me."

This guy is a total idiot! But then we seem to elect total idiots.

Interestingly enough, he's not, though the right does enjoy painting him that way. Then again, the right likes painting anyone to the left as "stupid", "traitorous", "evil", "crazy", yadda, yadda, yadda.....

Now, I've never seen you do that Mr P, but you know how it is. As for Franken, he's a bright guy.... the Repubs have certainly elected people with far less smarts. And with Ahhhhhnold doing a second term as the Governator, I'm not so sure Franken filling Wellfeld's old seat is such a far out thing. :dunno:

Well, to be fair, you probably didn't agree with most of what he said. And, like I said, the Repubs have certainly elected people with less smarts without flinching.

Can anyone here spell "potatoe" [sic]? :D

I can disagree with someone and still think they are bright.

Ummmm honey that is Wellstone.

Franken is a joke, he couldn't carry Arnold's jockstrap. Coleman would hardly have to campaign if they run this dolt.

Heh.... you are correct. Sorry. I have moments like that!

Ya might be right. On the other hand, you might not. Might want to hear what he has to say before you pre-judge, though. And that was my only point since each time any Dem announces for anything, the right-wingers immediately start trashing them.

Oh i've listened to this clown on Sirius, its mostly schtick and bad shtick at that. He couldn't make it as a comedian, couldn't make it as an actor, Air America is getting wiped ratings wise and now lol he wants to run for Senate! You guys must have someone better in Minnesota....or are you already giving up that seat without a fight?

Oh almost forgot....and he got his ass kicked by O'Reilly no matter how the media spins it.

Franken was NEVER a comedian. He was a wanna be. He's a wanna be actor and a wanna be talk show host. Now he's gonna be a wanna be senator. He ranks right up there with that fat slob michael moore. Two pee's in a pod. Minnisota elects muslims and ex-wrestlers so its posible they could elect his dumbass.

If Franken runs, I'll have to tune into the political ads in his area for the entertainment value. Not that I am particularly fond of his style of humor, but that I think his politics and reasoning are hilarious. When Franken is trying to be serious, he's normally at his funniest.

I don't see anything wrong with saying governator..I think it's funny really...

But I do agree with you on the girly-man part....

Franken makes me laugh. The present guy we have makes me weep.

Mark Twain said that humor is the only thing that separates us from the animals.

For those who may say that Franken has no leadership experience, no history of legislative initiatives and no political experience, I reply:

"So? If HAVING those traits got us into the mess we're in now, maybe it's TIME to consider Plan B, huh?" :dunno:

LOL! What does his success as a comedian or actor have to do with his ability to win a gubnatorial election? Especially in a state - no offense to Minnesotans intended - that elected Jesse Ventura. Ronald Reagan wasn't a really reknowned thespian either.
Maybe lefties just don't listen to talk radio as much as righties. I've listened to rush Limbaugh a time or two and unless all you want to hear is some mindless regurgitation of how evil liberals are out to destroy America there's really no point in dialing in. I've seen Franken's show on Sundance and it's certainly no worse than that.

^Your own biased perception.
