A suspect in last weekend's failed car bomb attack on Times Square was taken into custody late Monday while trying to leave the country, a law enforcement official said.

The suspect, a Pakistani, was identified at midnight Monday at John F. Kennedy International Airport and was stopped, said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press early Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation.

The suspect has not been named. He was being held in New York.

Law enforcement officials say the suspect recently returned from a trip to Pakistan and bought the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder used in the failed car bomb three weeks ago and paid cash. The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the case.

The SUV was rigged with a crude propane-and-gasoline bomb. It had cheap-looking alarm clocks connected to a 16-ounce can filled with fireworks.

And it was law enforcement what caught him. They didn't have to torture anyone to do it.

You know you sound like a broken record. YOU act like EVERY time anything has to be done cour counter terrorism it has to involve torture!!! Last I checked that was reserved for highly placed individuals with extensive knowledge of current and future plans to do harm to innocent civilians (the govt doesn't torture EVERY person caught)...

You and other like you jsut don't like to admitt that there are poeple out there who would like nothing better than to see you dead just for where you were born!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Law enforcement got him because they were able to trace him through the car and materials. But there will be more like him unless the training facilities and bases are taken out. That's not a job law enforcement can do. You don't sit and wait for the next nut case to do something, you take proactive action and stop it at it's source. In this case pakistan. Have you noticed most of the terror related incidences have been by people of pakistani origin or they have gone to pakistan for training. Law enforcement can only deal with things domestically and after they happen.

And how do you know there was no torture involved after they caught him, were you there?

I see it wasn't a "white-looking male who is probably upset about the healthcare bill."

Meanwhile, New York City police are on their way to Pennsylvania to speak to a man who man have recorded the bombing suspect. The video apparently shows a white man in his 40s taking off his shirt in the alley and putting on a different shirt. It may also show him shredding the shirt before putting it in a bag, Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Bloomberg later told CBS Evening News Anchor Katie Couric that the suspect behind the bombing attempt could be a domestic terrorist angry at the government who acted alone.

"If I had to guess 25 cents, this would be exactly that. Homegrown, or maybe a mentally deranged person, or somebody with a political agenda that doesn't like the health care bill or something. It could be anything," he said.

"There is no evidence here of a conspiracy, there is no evidence that it's tied into anything else. It looks like an amateurish job done by at least one person," he told Couric.
