They are here, they're call thumbdrives. Some companies sell solid state disk drives, which are nothing more than a thumbdrive, but with more capacity. They have no moving parts and, thus, have fewer breakdowns. The downside is their cost. They are over twice as expensive as a regular hard drive.

Also, some companies are experimenting with having an entire computer on a thumb drive. That is, the entire operating system and applications.

Of course, there is cloud computing, too. That computing model will put all your applications, all of your documents, all of your important files up on a server somewhere. All you will need is a dumb terminal with a browser.

wonder when it will be available for home PC's ??? that's great. no boot up or wait time. power on and instant desktop. I never buy 1st generation anything. ill wait a few years first.

my HD died last last year. but i had the entire OS on a DVD. about 20 mins to restore.
