Given our troops are fight a war, how about making the award only being given posthumously?

Hold fire, earn a medal

U.S. troops in Afghanistan could soon be awarded a medal for not doing something, a precedent-setting award that would be given for “courageous restraint” for holding fire to save civilian lives.

The proposal is now circulating in the Kabul headquarters of the International Security Assistance Force, a command spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

“The idea is consistent with our approach,” explained Air Force Lt. Col. Tadd Sholtis. “Our young men and women display remarkable courage every day, including situations where they refrain from using lethal force, even at risk to themselves, in order to prevent possible harm to civilians. In some situations our forces face in Afghanistan, that restraint is an act of discipline and courage not much different than those seen in combat actions.”

Soldiers are often recognized for non-combat achievement with decorations such as their service’s commendation medal. But most of the highest U.S. military decorations are for valor in combat. A medal to recognize a conscious effort to avoid a combat action would be unique.

Consideration of such an award, first reported by an Associated Press reporter in Afghanistan, doesn’t mean that, if approved, troops would be pressured to prevent such casualties at risk to themselves, Sholtis said

fer cryin out loud. Sometimes the brass displays their stupidity in ways that are incomprehensible. Obviously, the idiot proposing this idea has never been on the ground in a combat situation and it appears to me that we have yet another Air Force wing nut looking for an award that means absolutely nothing to bolster his lackluster career.

It is insane. The troops go to great lengths to ensure civillians are not harmed in any way.

Next up, the "Works and Plays Well With The Enemy" medal - brought to by the left wing branch of the Armed Forces of America

Liberalism is trying to destroy the US military

What could they call this medal? We have the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat, perhaps they could call this award the Bleeding Heart

Political correctness will destroy the military or at least give our enemies the upper hand. In this particular case however, I believe it has more to do with "combat envy" than anything else.

For decades, the Air Force has been the self proclaimed strategic force. Many Air Force senior officers have publicly proclaimed the other services as anything from minor support to obsolete. While it is true that the Air Force can bomb the planet back to the Stone Age, there are few times when that is a primary military strategy. Currently, the Air Force finds itself as a supporting element to ground forces and they absolutely DETEST that. So, given that the Air Force (with a few exceptions like JTACS) are not on the front lines, how do they get more medals and awards? Why, they just make stuff up like the OP. They have even given Bronze Stars to the guys flying drones. What folks dont realize is that the pilots of those drones are in FRIKKIN NEVADA and not Iraq or Afghanastan.

The era of the PC rules of combat came into being during the Vietnam War and is responsible for it's 10 year duration.

The exact number of American lives lost in combat due to this liberal policy is not known but I'm sure it is substantial.
