My Grandfather served in World War II. We were told that he recieved a purple heart (or something like that) for some reason. Is there anyway to request information from the military to find out what he did during his service? Problem is I have little to no information about it.

A lot of paper records were archived and microfiched. They were stored in St. Louis which suffered a major fire. Chances of finding anything is slim, but you can request a copy of his DD214 and awards. They will need personal info such as SSAN and/or Service Number, branch of service, and some other minor details.

Here is a link for the form. Mailing addresses are on it.

You will probably need a death cert in addition to the ssi # etc to get records. I think the fastest way to find out what you need is to contact the local VA office and tell em what you want etc..they will tell you what to do and where to go site or department wise.
