FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The House version of the state budget includes $100,000 for a Christian school in Breathitt County -- despite a Kentucky Supreme Court ruling last month that said public funding for religious education violates the state's constitution.

That appropriation -- and those for a handful of other projects, including $420,800 for the Louisville Waterfront Development Corp. in each of the next two years -- was added by the House to the compromise budget proposal offered two weeks ago by Gov. Steve Beshear.

The $100,000 for Riverside Christian School was also included in the budget that the House passed during this year's regular session -- which ended with a House-Senate deadlock over the state spending plan.

The deadlock led Beshear to offer his compromise -- deemed acceptable to both House and Senate leaders -- which did not include the Riverside money.
