lowered expectations?......

on the other hand....

I was once at a wedding reception where each table was required to give a sentence of advice to the newlyweds......there were five couples at our table, all friends for many years.....the rules said that the couple who had been married the shortest period of time had to stand up and announce the advice......my wife and I, who had been married twenty five years at that time, were the couple married the shortest period of time.....our advice, "if you want to be married for fifty years, surround yourself with friends who want to be married for fifty years".......

The ablility to look past the things you don't care for in your spouse. The humor each bring to the relationship. And the friendship you share with each other. To me, these are as important as any....In Oct. my hubs and I will be married for 43 years....

Can't you do all of these outside of the confines of marriage?

Why yes, you can. And you can with respect as well. It isn't a requirement in life to be married. But life is better all around when you have friendship, humor etc. splashed throughout it.

The answer is, it is probably different things for different people.
For me, both people need to:

1. Have integrity**
2. Be affectionate/loving
3. Be Christian
4. Put their spouse above all other people.
5. Have a sense of humor/be funny
5. Be intelligent/have intellectual curiosity
6. Not have a big, fat, sloppy butt  :coffee:

** the single most important thing. Without this, nothng else will matter
