Edith Shain, nurse whose V-J kiss with sailor in Times Square immortalized in Life photo, dies at 91

The nurse whose celebratory V-J Day kiss with an exuberant sailor in Times Square was immortalized in an iconic photograph has died.

Edith Shain was 91 and passed away without ever really knowing for sure who planted the kiss on her while photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured the epic moment with his camera.

While Shain waited until the 1970s to come forward to say she was the woman in the Life magazine picture, the identity of the sailor remains in dispute.

"In retrospect, I should have said, 'Hey, wait a minute!" and gotten his name and number, Shain told The Daily News in 2008.

For the remainder of her life, Shain continued to honor World War II veterans by attending wreath layings, parades and other memorial events.

Since the identity of the nurse had been claimed, in its August 1980 issue, the editors of Life asked that the kissing sailor come forward. In the October 1980 issue, the editors reported that eleven men and three women had come forward claiming to be the subjects of the photograph.

That time and generation have always fascinated me. I used to love when my grandma told me stories about when her and my grandpa were young. He was in WW2 and she lived with his mom while he fought in the war. She used to take us up to the house where they lived and my grandpa grew up. I love the movies,war stories and everything about it.

same here. my late dad and uncle served. ive joined 2 WW2 forums. which included Brits, Americans, Germans and other Nationalities telling of their relatives experience in that war.
