On line smoke shops should see an increase in business as Dems once again do what they do best - tax and spend
Well, as usual, folks, New York State's budget is in the red. So Democrats did what they always do: They raised taxes on a select minority -- smokers.
The latest tax of $1.60 raises the price of an average pack of cigarettes to over $9.00. In New York City, the new price will total almost $11.00 a pack.
For good measure, the Democrats will begin collecting taxes on cigarettes sold to Indian reservation visitors, too, who used to be able to buy them tax-free. One Indian chief warned that any attempt to collect those taxes would be considered "an act of war."
Now, lest you think that's an idle threat, a similar attempt in the early 1990s led to violence. Grab the pitchforks and the tomahawks, fellas -- this could get ugly.
Especially since Democrats are crowing over this, their latest Indian conquest. Jeffrey Klein, pale-face Democrat senator from the wealthy Westchester suburbs, bragged that the state now has the "added muscle it needs to collect this vital source of tax revenue" from the Injuns.
Three predictions here, folks:
• One: The black market for cigarettes in New York will grow exponentially, as will organized crime.
• Two: If the poor, indigenous Indians protest, the Democrats will squash them like bugs; violently, if they have to. All that appreciation for "diverse cultures" will be just talk.
• Three: Democrats will spend more revenue than they tax, and will soon come back for even higher taxes. They always do. They're Democrats. Your money, in their hands, is what goes up in smoke.

New Yorkers who like to smoke will have to dig a little deeper to light up next month, after the Legislature passed a bill on Monday that will give the state the highest cigarette taxes in the country.
The new law, part of an emergency budget measure to keep the government running, adds another $1.60 in state taxes to every cigarette pack sold starting on July 1, pushing the average price of a pack to about $9.20.
The average price in New York City, which imposes its own cigarette taxes, will be even higher, nearly $11 a pack.
Those who prefer other tobacco products will also be forced to pay significantly more.
The tax on smokeless tobacco will more than double, to $2 an ounce from 96 cents an ounce, starting on Aug. 1. And the wholesale tax on cigars, dips and other kinds of tobacco will rise to 75 percent from 46 percent .
And in what may be the legislation’s most controversial provisions, starting on Sept. 1, the state will begin collecting — or try to collect — taxes on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations to off-reservation visitors, an issue that led to violent protests during the early 1990s.
