As of August 19, 2010, you have spent the first 231 days of this year working for government.

This year, an average of 63% of your income goes to pay government taxes, fees, fines, etc. (Federal, state, local). Plus the costs of filling out government forms, keeping extra records for government, waiting for government delays, building or modifying government-mandated facilities and structures, etc.

Starting on August 20, your income can be considered yours again.

If government doesn't impose any more increases between now and the end of the year, that is.

In 2009, Cost of Government Day was August 10.

In 2008, it was July 18.
